Hi houseproudconstr,

Thanks for your post. For the initial payment, record this directly against the VAT return (Taxes > Select drop-down beside return > Select record payment) and then match this in your bank feed.

For the duplicate payment, create an expense transaction (+ New > Expense), selecting HMRC as the supplier, the date and bank account this was paid from, then on the account details line select an expense account and enter the amount paid with no VAT and save.

Please then follow the steps below to record the refund of this:

1. Create a supplier credit (+ New > supplier credit)
2. Choose the correct date and select HMRC as the supplier, put in the amount, no VAT, save & close
3. Create a Bank Deposit (+ New > Bank Deposit), to show that the money went into your bank account
4. Choose the correct bank account on the top left corner, choose the date when the money actually hit your account
5. For 'Received from' choose HMRC, for the account choose Creditors, enter the amount, no VAT, save & close
6. Go to the Supplier's page create cheque
7. Tick the deposit against the supplier credit (this shows QuickBooks, that the supplier credit has been used, and money was received from the supplier) and close
8. Match the deposit against the transaction on your banking screen
