Can't file the VAT return - could it be the 18 months is up? But the settings say I am MTD connected and there's no warning message to say re-authorise.  Do I have to disconnect and start again perhaps?

Hi there, pillowprojects.

I'm here to make sure you'll be able to submit VAT return through the bridging software.

Once your QuickBooks account is authorised to interact with HMRC, you'll need to reauthorise QuickBooks every 18 months based on HMRC's guidelines.

To re-establish your connection, disconnect and then reconnect your account so you can get you back on track. Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon and select Account and settings.
  2. In Advanced, select Making Tax Digital.
  3. Hit Learn how to connect and follow the steps.

Once you have disconnected, follow these steps so you'll be reconnected.

  1. In QuickBooks, go to the Advanced section under Account and settings, select Learn how to connect.
  2. Click Let's go, this will take you to the HMRC page. Once you have read the guidelines, select Continue.
  3. Enter your HMRC credentials to sign in.
  4. Select Grant Authority and the HMRC page will close.
  5. Back in QuickBooks, click Continue.
  6. Go to Taxes, and check that the MTD badge is enabled.

Once done, you can go ahead and establish a new connection with MTD so you can file your VAT return without any error. Learn more through this article: Authorise QuickBooks to interact with HMRC - MTD for small businesses.
