The quickbooks balance is a lot different to our bank account balance why is this ?

We advise you to carry out a reconciliation of your account to locate the discrepancy. You could also view the transactions in the chart of account and compare these with your actual bank statement to establish if you have the correct amount of transactions, also check that you have the correct opening balance.
