Question

When recording a CIS payment do I record the payment figure that matches the bank account so that it reconciles or do I record the figure before the CIS deduction?

I'm happy to see you here in the Community, @paulmarchantbuil.

I'd like to shed some light regarding the recording of your CIS payment in QuickBooks Online.

QuickBooks will calculate your CIS deductions, track your CIS withheld, or suffered amounts then create the necessary reports for HMRC. That said, the payment that will be tracked is after the deduction.

To make this possible, you'll need to enable the CIS feature. Here's how:

  1. Click on the Gear icon
  2. Press on Account and Settings.
  3. Hit on Advanced.
  4. Select Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).
  5. Enter your info.

Know that you can't turn CIS off. Don't worry, you can stop using it anytime you like. We keep the accounts and reports around so your records are straight.

Here's a link that you can bookmark for more details about how CIS works in the system: CIS in QuickBooks Online.

On the other hand, when recording the deductions take note, that the Date for deduction calculation can be set if you want you record CIS suffered deductions for a different tax period. It defaults to today’s date, which is the current tax period.

To learn more about submitting them, please see this link: The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) is for contractors and subcontractors working in construction.

Should you need anything else about this or with QuickBooks Online, just let me know by leaving a comment below. Take care!
