Question

All of my prior reconciliations are gone!!

My accountant and I are both puzzled.  I have QBO and had mostly finished a prior years reconciliation, when for some reason, I go to recon my main company checking account and the starting balance is off by $800K and is shows no prior reconciliations.  The register does show transactions with an R, but the balance is wrong and QB tech support has no answer.  Any help would be appreciated.

Let's run a report to check your previous reconciliation, realst88.

QuickBooks Online automatically generates a reconciliation report every time you reconcile an account. To view it, here are the steps you can follow:

  1. Go to Reports.
  2. Type Reconciliation Report in the Find report by name search bar.
  3. Select Reconciliation Reports.
  4. Select the Account for the reconciliation report you want to view.
  5. From the Report period drop-down arrow, choose the reconcile period.
  6. Select View Report.

On the other hand, once the balance is off, these are the cause:

  • Someone entered an incorrect ending balance at the start of the reconciliation.
  • There are missing or duplicate transactions in QuickBooks.
  • Someone entered transactions into QuickBooks that haven't cleared your bank yet.
  • Someone deleted a reconciled transaction.

You can also use the Audit log feature to check if someone made changes to your account.

To fix it, here is a link to guide you through the steps: Fix issues for accounts you've reconciled in the past in QuickBooks Online.

Let me know if you need additional information by commenting below. I'll be around until you're able to fix the reconciled account.

When I pull the reconcilliation report for my main checking account covering all dates, I get absolutely nothing. I have transactions going back to 2006 so there should have been something.  The same is also true for the rest of my 8 or so bank accounts.  The only account so far that shows a reconciliation is a credit card account.

Thanks for keeping us updated with the results, realst88.

I'd like to verify if you have previously migrated to QuickBooks Online (QBO)? If yes, that could be why it's missing, as you need to reconcile it again. If no, let's use the Audit Log tool to verify who made changes to your account. An accountant user might undo the reconciliation or change the status of your reconciled transactions.

To view the Audit Log, here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear Icon.
  2. Choose Audit Log.
  3. Click the Filter button.
  4. Select Reconciliations under Events.
  5. Click Apply.

If the transactions were deleted, there would be a need to re-enter those transactions manually and reconcile it again.

To learn more about reconciliation topics, you can browse them through this one-stop hub article: Learn the reconcile workflow in QuickBooks.

Let me know if you have any other questions about this or anything QuickBooks related. The Community has your back and I'm here if you need further assistance. Have a great day.

This also happened to me today.  The only thing that changed is that I updated with the latest version of Quickbooks desktop.  Can I uninstall the update?

Hey there, JLPlante.

Thanks for joining this thread. I'd be glad to lend a hand so you're able to view previous reconciliations in your QuickBooks Desktop account.

As an initial troubleshooting step, I recommend running a reconciliation report and verifying there aren't any filters preventing the full view of the data. Here's how:

1. Go to the Reports menu, then select Reports Center.
2. Search and open a Previous Reconciliation report.
3. Select the account you reconciled, then either Detail, Summary, or Both.

The following linked article provides additional info about reconciling an account in QuickBooks Desktop.

If you find there aren't any filters in place and you still aren't able to view your previous reconciliations, you may need to reach out to a member of the Desktop Support Team. Agents have the ability to share your screen and take a closer look to determine what's causing this issue. This link gives the steps to get in touch with the team: Contact the QuickBooks Desktop Customer Support Team

Please don't hesitate to reach back out if you have any other questions or concerns. I'll be here to help in any way that I can.

Same problem as the others.  Reconciliation data gone

January 17, 2023

Having the exact same issue. QBO and only the last month bank reconciliation is available but I know we have reconciled each month starting around 2018! I need to reprint 2020 reconciliations and it will only show the last month reconciled, even when choosing "all dates"!

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, acarlton.

Have you tried the following troubleshooting below?

  1. Log in to QuickBooks Online using a private browser.
  2. Clear the browser's cache and cookies.
  3. Log in to QuickBooks Online using other supported browsers.

If so, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Online Team and report that previous reconciliations suddenly disappear in QuickBooks. That way, our Product Team can check about how to retrieve those missing reconciled accounts.

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Select Help (?), then Contact Us.
  3. Choose a way to connect with us:
    • Start a chat with a support expert.
    • Get a callback from the next available expert.

For now, you may want to reconcile again the bank account when needed. Check out this guide: Learn the reconcile workflow in QuickBooks.

Let me know how the contact goes by commenting below or post again if you have other QuickBooks concerns.

I had a similar issue and think I solved it!!  I had recently added two new "bank accounts" for credits that needed to be applied with various agencies.  I realized it kept defaulting to those new accounts when reconciling, even if I chose the correct account.  I opened my Chart of Accounts (under "Company"-->"Chart of Accounts") and moved my primary account up to the first line and my reconciliations reappeared!  I hope this helps!

Has anyone made headway with this? I'm told by three different reps that because the audit log doesn't show the bank recs, I never did them! Calling me a liar, essentially. I have over 3 years of missing bank recs. My accountant requires the bank rec to be completed for taxes which are done and filed. I cannot fathom the gaslighting happening here.
