American Express QBDT Bank Feed Update

Hello,

I am getting a notification that after 3/30/23 the only bank feed available for American Express will be "American Express - QBDT".  I disabled my feed to try to re-establish my bank feed using the new system and it requires the account owner approval and says to "have the authorized account holder provide authorization." Does this mean this only works with the account owner's login information? I have always been able to link the accounts before using my account manager login.

Another article I read said that this update only applies to people who are setting up new bank feed connections after 3/30/23 and if we have an old connection it will continue working.  This may be true, if you never have to disconnect your old feed, but that is rarely the case.  I would like to make sure I can get the new connection working when I inevitably have to re-establish a connection and the "American Express" option is not available anymore.

Any assistance you provide would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I appreciate your effort in trying to reconnect American Express to QuickBooks Desktop, NUMBERS3.

Let me present some helpful information to get your bank working again. Yes, you're right that the new connection requires the account owner's approval credentials. Please have the primary account holder secure authorization to proceed with the Bank Feeds set up.

Once you have the primary credentials, update QuickBooks to the latest release and create a backup of your company file. Then, prepare to switch to the new system and connect again your American Express account. Please browse this article for the complete instructions: Refresh your connection for Express Web Connect online banking.

I'm willing to answer other queries you may have about Bank Feeds in QuickBooks. Just add the details below and I'll take care of them for you.

I'm baffled. I have an Amex credit card only. I download the transactions every month and it goes great.  So I disconnected that one and established a new one.  Do I create a new account for downloaded transactions in QB or can I use the old one? If I use the old one, do I still download all previous transactions? Or will they now be duplicates? When I set up the new account, it just said "American Express" and did not say "American Express Card - QBDT" - so am I just re-setting the old account?  HELP !!

Let me provide some details about the American Express connection updates so you'll be guided on how to set this up, 74eman.

Starting on the 30th of March 2023, American Express will now be American Express Card - QBDT. Also, the updated bank feeds provide you with a more secure and better banking experience. That's the reason, why you'll have to reconnect your account to continue with online banking services.

You'll want to follow the steps provided below to ensure that reconnection is successful and you'll not be experiencing issues. To start, make sure to update to the latest release and create a backup of your company file. Then, prepare to switch to Express Web Connect. I've outlined the steps on how:

  1. Go to File, then select Switch to Single-user Mode.
  2. Select Company, then My Company.
  3. Sign in to your Intuit Account if you’re not already.
Note: If you haven't yet, you can create an Intuit account or recover your user ID and password.
  4. Delete pending online payments or checks.
  5. Add and match previously downloaded transactions.

Also, after you've disconnected your accounts, you can set up an account for Bank Feeds. Here's how:

  1. Go to Banking and select Bank Feeds, then select Set Up Bank Feed for an Account.
  2. Enter the account name and select Next.
Note: Use the updated account name shown in the Account reconnection required list and return here to complete Step 4.
  3. You’ll see the My Company sign-in page. Sign in using your Intuit Account user ID.
  4. Enter your online banking account info, then select Connect. QuickBooks will connect to the bank’s server.
Note: Your bank may prompt you for a one-time password (OTP).
  5. Select the account(s) you want to connect to QuickBooks, then select Connect.
  6. Select Close.

You may see duplicate transactions downloaded to the account, you can remove them instead.

Furthermore, when QuickBooks automatically downloads the latest bank transactions, it tries to look for and match with those transactions you've entered. Learn from this article on how to categorize them: Categorize And Match Online Bank Transactions In QuickBooks Online.

I was able to get the new American Express QBDT bank feed set up, and it is downloading all of the transactions for all of the cardholders on the account, but I am getting a lot of duplicate transactions.  But I need to do it twice.  After the initial set up, on the second sync, I was getting an error that service is unavailable and try again in a couple of days.  I unlinked and set the sync up again, but now I have a ton of duplicate transactions.  Also, with old sync, in the memo line of each transaction, the card holder name appeared, now all we seem to get in the memo line is the last 5 digits of the card number.  That's a total bummer.  Is there any way to get the old data?

Thanks for joining the thread, smwurzel.

I appreciate you for performing some troubleshooting steps to get this sorted out. In QuickBooks Desktop, we can remove duplicate transactions right from your bank feed. However, how you delete transactions is determined by the mode you are in. We can switch between bank modes and follow the steps in this article to remove duplicate entries: Remove duplicate transactions in QuickBooks Desktop.

To get the old bank data, we can download a file (.QBO) with your company's transactions from your bank or credit card. Then import that file to QuickBooks to add those transactions to your accounts. If your bank offers Web Connect, follow the steps below:

  1. From Banking, select Bank Feeds, then Import Web Connect Files.
  2. Choose the .QBO file you saved, then tap Open.
  3. When asked to select your bank account:
    • Use a QuickBooks account that exists if the account you're importing transactions into is already set up in QuickBooks.
    • Create a new QuickBooks account if the account you're importing transactions into isn't in QuickBooks yet. Learn how to create an account.
  4. Press Continue. You'll see a dialog box telling you that the data has been successfully read into QuickBooks. Hit OK.
  5. Go to the Bank Feeds Center to review your transactions.

You can also connect through Direct Connect. Just follow the steps and details in this article: Set up or edit bank accounts for Bank Feeds in QuickBooks Desktop. Then, go to Connect with Direct Connect section.

I've also added articles about handling imported transactions, accounts, and other relevant matters.

I have a client who got a message in Desktop 2023 after he upgraded from 2021  to disable and reconnect his AmExp (2 accounts) to Bank Feeds.  After being on the phone with QB Accountant Support I was told that to get Direct Connect to happen in Desktop he would need to call AmExp and have them setup Direct Connect on their end for him.  It does seem I remember in the past that AmExpress HAD to allow the Direct Connect.

April 12, 2023

We have several AMEX cardholders and the transactions are only downloading from the main cardholder account.  When I go to connect the account, it shows all the cardholders but the only one with a balance is the main cardholder.  The balance amount is the entire balance for ALL cardholders.  I don't understand why this will not work and it will not let me connect all cardholders to the one account in Quickbooks Desktop.

It’s such a joke that Intuit can’t explain or solve this. I gave up. Came on here over a month ago. Everyone basically having the same problem and no one from Intuit has given a solution.

Like I said over a month ago, been downloading multiple card transactions for years. As of March 31, can’t do it.

So frustrating

April 14, 2023

I'm having the same problem. We have 2 Amex accounts. I was able to reconnect through bank feeds selecting American Express QBDT but I can't view any transactions. Where do I go to view transactions?

April 14, 2023

Let me chime in and provide some tips to get these balances to match, and you're able to view transactions in QuickBooks bank feeds, @EarlyAP and @Acct144.

Before anything else, I’m delighted that you've finally reconnected your Amex accounts in QuickBooks Desktop bank feeds.

@EarlyAP Since all your transactions are correct, you can try updating your QuickBooks to the latest release to examine and help narrow down the issue.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Click Update Now, then tap Get Updates.
  3. Close and reopen your QuickBooks after.
  4. Select Yes when asked.
  5. When the installation finishes, follow the on-screen instructions.

After initiating the process, please go to Bank Feeds and check your balance. If they still aren’t a match, you can utilize the Verify and Rebuild Data tools to resolve any data damages in your company files.

@Acct144, have you selected the Download Transactions button located under your Account Information? If not yet, you can press the said option to view your entries. Otherwise, you’ll want to perform the troubleshooting above (updating QuickBooks and rebuilding your company file data) to sort this out.

On the other hand, you need to contact our Banking Support team if the issue persists. Our representatives can check this further and find more solutions.

Updated the release already and Verify/Rebuild (Zero errors).   The balance shown in bank feeds for the bank side shows as mirror negative of the actual balance shown in QB (which is correct and matches the balance reported on the credit card bank web site also).   It is just in the bank feeds screen of QB where this issue appears (Things were fine before the disconnect from the old AMEX provider and connect to the new)

I was able to re-establish the new AMEX QBDT bank feed as admin.  However, no other user can access this bank feed. It gives them a pop up stating "You do not have the access to perform this action.  To complete this, request for access from your Primary Admin".  I have verified that this user has a role specifying full Bank Feed access.  Nothing changed with this user.  She was able to download all transactions prior to the update.

How do I grant other users the ability to use the bank the AMEX QBDT bank feed?

May 15, 2023

Hi there, HD007.

Thank you for visiting the QuickBooks Community. I also appreciate you for providing detailed information about your concern. Let's perform some steps so your user can access your AMEX bank feed in QuickBooks Desktop smoothly.

The user's error seems related to an Intuit account that's used to access the connected Intuit services like QuickBooks Payments, Payroll, direct deposit, etc. Please note that utilizing an Intuit account is not the same as using your QuickBooks company file user ID. Your QuickBooks company file user ID gives you access to basic features like creating an invoice or paying a bill. While Intuit Account user ID is used to access any Intuit account such as mentioned above. In this case, the pop-up message isn't connected to a user role in QBDT.

I suggest that your user submit a request to you for access to the Intuit account. Once you accept the request, your user will be able to access all of the related services through their Intuit account. As a result, the user can now use the updated AMEX bank feed.

For additional information and how to perform the process, you may refer to this article to your user and recommend completing step one: Set up access between QuickBooks Desktop and connected Intuit services. Once done, you'll have to accomplish step two.

Lastly, you may refer to this article as a future reference that will help you run a specific report to view all roles and user permissions in QBDT: Create and manage users and roles in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.

Keep me posted if you have other questions about managing your bank feeds in QBDT. I'm always here and ready to assist, HD007. Have a great day!

May 16, 2023

It wasn't very clear on what to do if the user is already created and already has an Intuit user ID, but I was able to figure it out from the links you attached.  There was no way for the user to request access.  I went to the Intuit User Management and sent her a request.  Once she accepted, she was then able to do the bank feed.

It's was a bit confusing too, because the Quickbooks data base file it references is a test database we use and she is not a user in that database.  But, it works now so thank you for your assistance and expertise because  I would have never figured this on my own!

Hello--

I was able to successfully transition to the QBDT bank feed.

I noticed that after transitioning the downloaded transactions have less information in the memo.

For example, the credit card holders' name is no longer downloaded, which is unfortunate because we have over 20 card holders and without the card holder name, I have to do a lot of extra work to categorize the transactions.

Any ideas on how I can get that information downloaded, as before?

Thank you,

Noah

We appreciate you for successfully transitioning to the QuickBooks Desktop bank feeds, Noah15.

May I know your financial institution? This way, I can check if there's an issue with credit card holders' names not downloaded in QuickBooks Desktop. On the other hand, the transactions downloaded in the Bank Feeds Center depend on the data that was sent by your bank. The system will post the transactions the same way they sent to us.

If you haven't contacted them yet, I'd recommend doing so. This way, they can review your transaction and the memo information that was sent to QuickBooks. In the meantime, you can use the WebConnect feature to manually import bank transactions into QuickBooks Desktop. Here's how:

  1. Click the Banking menu.
  2. Hover over Bank Feeds and choose Banking Center.
  3. Find your bank and select Download Transactions. This opens a browser window to your bank's website.
  4. Sign in to your bank's website to download the Web Connect file.

Once you have the file, follow the steps in this article to import it into QuickBooks: How to import Web Connect (.qbo) files. I've added some resources that you can use to help manage your online banking transactions in the program:

Additionally, you can visit this link: Banking. It contains more resources on how to deal with QuickBooks Bank Feeds as well as a write-up to help you reconcile your account.

The banking institution in this case is American Express. The AMEX cards are issued through Delta.

Is there a specific phone number I can call at AMEX that deals with bank feeds?

Thank you for your help.

BROKEN BROKEN BROKEN: I'm a ten year user of Amex and QB DeskTop. I dreed the monthly Amex reconcilation. The process is never easy and it do not work consistently and smoothly. I'd spoken to Amex and QB and each custmoer service representative politely says it is not their issue.

I have an Amex account set up in the Chart of Accounts, and follow these steps:

1. Open on-line feed center. Exclusive use.

2. Bank and Credit Cards (click on the arrows in circle)

3 QB message "connection complete" , then 'Updating" (nothing happens)

4.  Go to File, Utilities, Import, Webconnect, (Asked to select bank: Use Existing QB Account, or Create a New Account. Does NOT Recognize teh Amex account I have used for years.

5. Updated the connect to the bank by Activating and Deactivating the Credit Card NUMEROUS times.

Sometimes this works for a month--then back to the hellish time of trying to figure it out again.

Please advise

I hear your sentiments, @safoglio. I'm here to provide troubleshooting solutions about AMEX bank feeds not working in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

I suggest ensuring you have connected to the correct American Express (AMEX) Credit card account to continue downloading the latest transactions from online banking services. You'll have to select  American Express Card QBDT since the bank feed for American Express @Kerry Anne isn't available now, and we're working with American Express to fix this.

If you haven't refreshed your connection for Express Web Connect already, please follow the steps outlined in this article to ensure the latest transactions will be automatically downloaded to your bank feeds: Refresh your connection for Express Web Connect online banking.

If everything is accurately selected, I suggest contacting our Technical Support Team. I understand you've already reached out to them. However, it would be best to contact them again. They have the tools to look into your account and perform a screen-sharing session to investigate this behavior further.

We're always here in the Community to help if you have other questions about managing bank transactions in QBDT. We're just around to help. Stay safe.

Support has nothing to say.  I am on QB Enterprise Professional and the American Express QBDT does not work.  I get a message saying to try in a few hours 7500.  It does not work in a few hours.  I have tried connecting to the AE Website and downloading a statement but that does not work.  Can someone please tell me how to download the information from American express to the feeds?  This started to happen the moment I upgraded QB to the 2024 edition so I am thinking that is the problem.

February 18, 2025

This has been a nightmare since January 2025.  For whatever reason, one of our AMEX cards won't update.  The main cardholder login is used and even when we disable and re-establish the connection, it shows connection successful but won't download transactions.  Support says it's AMEX fault.  AMEX shows where they have authorized 3rd party access and throws it back to QB.  This is exhausting.  We've been on with support over 5 times now with no success, and their newest solution is to start a new company file.......really?!  Our other AMEX card is working fine and downloads transactions perfectly.  We've even created a new credit card account to link to, and still no success.  We have over 500 transactions on this card monthly and to now have to manually enter would be inefficient.  We have to reconcile this card daily due to the number of transactions.  PLEASE tell me someone has figured this out!

We don't want you to have this perception, RonFriedmanCPA. I just want to clarify what user access you clicked, because the assigned to a user affects the functionalities you can access.

There are different user roles you can give to your users to help them access the bank feed feature in the program, all you need to do is to check the description in the role list.

I added article for you to check if you want to learn more about how you can create and manage users and roles in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise: Create and manage users and roles in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.

Additionally, you can also check this article if you want to check how to buy more licenses to QuickBooks Desktop when you need them: Add a user license to your QuickBooks software.

We understand how crucial it is for your operations to run smoothly, HD007. It sounds like you've already tried several troubleshooting steps. Allow me to help you, so you can successfully download AMEX transactions.

Here's the guide for you:

  1. Download bank feed transactions in a test company file.
  2. Check if the file from your bank works with QuickBooks.
  3. Refresh the connection with your bank.
  4. Create and merge accounts.
  5. Turn off and activate online banking again.
