Question

Citizens Bank integration no longer supported?

I can no longer download transactions to Quickbooks online from Citizens Bank. Today, Citizens Bank customer support told me that Citizens no longer supports Quickbooks integration. Do you know if this is true? Is this a permanent change?

I understand the importance of seamless integration for your financial management needs, heliosdg.

QuickBooks Online relies on financial institutions to provide access to transaction data and facilitate connection. At this time, we haven't received any official updates regarding the discontinuation of Citizens Bank's integration.

Changes to compatibility and policies can occasionally occur due to adjustments made by banks or technology providers. However, without direct confirmation from them, we can't verify the accuracy of the information you received.

For now, I recommend checking their communication channels for any announcements. Additionally, we'll keep an eye out for any updates from our end.

To obtain your latest available transactions, you'll want to consider manually importing them into the program. Once done, please refer to these articles for guidance on the categorization and reconciliation process:

What if you’re unable to manually import them also?  I find the bank and it gives me 4 steps to manually import transactions. When I get to step 4, "Simply double-click the file and Quickbooks will automatically open to import your transactions”, nothing happens.

On desktop I do file, utilities, import. Web connect files. Then select the .QBO.

@heliosdg

You can use MT Online or one of the converter tools (e.g csv2qbo @ $60 one time license) as a workaround.

I could not find the converter for $60.00 one time charge -all the ones I looked at were monthly subscriptions?

Could you provide the link to the one time charge website?

October 30, 2023

I found the converter - https://www.moneythumb.com/shop/csv2qbo-convert/

It is $59.95 for unlimited conversions and very easy to use.  I tested and it worked beautifully!!!

Thank you very much for providing this option.

We can't get it to work either.  Quickbooks blames Citizens and Citizens blames Quickbooks.  When I try to connect I get this error:

Access Denied

You don't have permission to access "http://www1.citizensbankonline.com/" on this server.

Thanks for raising your banking concern here in the Community, MLCBookkeeper.

I want to ensure this matter is addressed quickly, so you can connect your bank account in QuickBooks Online (QBO) and keep your financial data updated.

For the time being, we have an ongoing issue (INV-92288) where customers like you experienced a permission error (108) while connecting Citizens Bank to QBO. Rest assured that this issue is currently being worked on with utmost urgency.

In keeping with this, I'd recommend contacting our Customer Care team to add your account to the list of affected users. This ensures you're in the loop about the investigation's status and its fix. To do this, here's how:

  1. Sign in to your QBO company.
  2. Go to the Help (?) menu.
  3. Select the Search tab.
  4. Click the Contact Us button.
  5. Enter a brief description of your concern in the What can we help you with? field.
  6. Select Continue.
  7. Choose a way to connect with us (Send a message/Chat or Get a callback/Callback).

Additionally, I encourage you to reconcile your accounts in QBO regularly (every month). This helps monitor your income and expenses and detect any possible errors accordingly. You may want to check out this article as your guide in doing and fixing reconciliations in QBO: Learn the reconcile workflow in QuickBooks.

If there's anything else you need or you have other banking concerns and questions about managing transactions in QBO, I'm always ready to help. Take care, and I wish you continued success, MLCBookkeeper.

Citizens Bank has a larger issue that started when Citizens Bank launched their new online platform in June/July of 2023.  The Data Mapping identifiers being used for the "Transaction Types" in the .QBO files do not match the requirements of QuickBooks.  I was able to manually change the transaction type from "DEPOSIT" to "DEP" and the file imported into QuickBooks without any problem. Before I made the correction I kept getting the "Error Code: OL-222".  There are other data mapping errors, but this is the sample I used to see if I could correct the issue on an existing file. I have tried reaching out to Citizens Bank to get the issue resolved, but I do not know how to raise the issue to the correct department at Citizens Bank.  Everyone I reach out to brushes me off, and I think it is because they do not know how to escalate the issue or think I am mistaken.  I am an accountant and I use QuickBooks all the time for myself and my clients, so I am confident there is an error on the Financial Institution Data Mapping.

How do you change a text file back to .qbo?

also did you find an issue with the & symbol?

September 6, 2023

I was able to right click the .qbo file and "open with" the Notepad program.  Then I made the changes and saved the file.  It remains a .qbo file, and then you can just import into Quickbooks the same way you normally do.  The problem is if you have a lot of transactions in the download it can be labor intensive.  Let me know how you make out with it.

September 10, 2023

Citizens is truly a disaster and an incredible embarrassment to commercial banking.  Depending on the platform you're on, you might not even get ACH details in the feed.   Their Access Optima feed does have everything, but still no automated QBO integration.  And to make matters worse, the downloaded QBO file is now not working, although i suspect this is also a QB issue.  Downloading CSV is a royal pain.  The dates need to be reformatted, description fields need to be trimmed, and the description fields are messed up.   We were with Investors Bank, who were acquired by Citizens.  Investors had a perfect QB feed.   While they informed us that there was no automated QBO connection, they didn't tell us how awful the feed would be.

September 14, 2023

I was able to fix the QBO file with a text editor to get it to import.

Basically the <TRNTYPE> should be: DEBIT or CREDIT

Any other <TRNTYPE> creates the error.

September 15, 2023

I tried that and it still doesn't import.   I don't even get an error; it just says that it imports but no transactions are there.  Any other tips?

BTW, i tried using a 3rd party importer at the recommendation of QB.   I used SaasAnt.  They don't support bank file imports, just bank statement imports.   So don't try that.   I wasted another bazillion hours figuring that out.

CSV works, but you need to change the date format (Citizens does not put leading zeros so it's 9/1/2023). Citizens Transaction Description field is useless, so you need to create a concatenated field with check number and the transaction detail if you want to use rules in QB.  I also have to trim the fields because Citizen's ACH details contain tons of spaces.   What a ridiculous amount of work, when all you had to do before was hit update in Quickbooks.

We have really gone backwards.

@kwolck

Have you explored csv2qbo converter tool? It's $60 one time license.

So Citizens just posted integration with NetSuite.    So is the QBO debacle was part of a deliberate plan?  Sad.

Hello there, @kwolck. I want to ensure this will be taken care of.

At this moment, where unable to confirm if that is the primary cause of the issue. I can see that you did everything you could. Since you're still experiencing the same thing, I highly recommend reaching out to our Phone support team to further verify the root cause of the problem. Here's how:

  1. Log in to your QBO account and go to the Help menu.
  2. Then, select the Search tab and click Contact Us.
  3. From there, enter a brief description of your concern and click Continue.
  4. Next, choose either Get a callback or Start a chat.

In the meantime, you can consider uploading your bank transactions manually.

Once the transactions are in, you're next step is to categorize and match them in QBO.

If you have any queries or other concerns about connecting your bank with QuickBooks, please don't hesitate to leave a reply below. The Community is always open to assist you.

My local Citizens Bank told us we need to switch to something called "Autobooks." They say they can't support Quickbooks any longer. Can't believe we might actually have to change our whole financial software, or all of our bank accounts over this...

October 30, 2023

I was able to download transactions for the first time since June for September transactions when I upgraded to QuickBooks 2024.  When I saw your post I tried and it is not working yet again!!!  QuickBooks WebConnect is till in the Export window but it is not working - I guess I have to go back to Plan B.
