Thanks for dropping by the Community, ksachse1.

Yes, it is possible to connect your American Express checking account to QuickBooks Self-Employed.

To connect your American Express checking account in QuickBooks Self-Employed, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Self-Employed account.
  2. Click on Transactions on the left menu.
  3. Click on the Add bank Account in the Add transaction dropdown button on the right side of the page.
  4. Type American Express on the search bar.
  5. Enter your American Express login credentials and click Sign In.
  6. Choose the account you want to connect to and click Continue.
  7. Review the account information and click Connect Account.
  8. If you have multiple American Express accounts, you'll need to repeat these steps for each account you want to connect.
  9. Once you have connected your American Express checking account, you can use QuickBooks Self-Employed to track your expenses and manage your finances.

You can utilize this article to learn how to categorize the transactions you download from your bank or enter into QuickBooks: Categorize transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Hi,
We're concerned about American Express BUSINESS Checking, not the American express Checking.
Best regards.

Go to Bookkeeping and select Transactions to review, add, and match them. Note: You can attach one American Express Business login to your QuickBooks company. But you can connect as many cards to that login as you'd like. If you have both personal and business American Express accounts, connect them one at a time.

I am seeing no option for American Express Business Checking.  Every other option showing for American Express involves Personal banking/credit cards or just business credit cards.  I need to connect my AMEX Business Checking account to my Quickbooks.

Hi there, Backcountry Drones.

I'll help you connect your American Express Business checking account to QuickBooks.

Since you can't find the AMEX Business Checking account on the list, we can perform some basic troubleshooting steps. In some cases, unexpected behaviors from the program are caused by stored cache and site data in a browser.

You can rule this out by using an incognito window:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari (new versions): Command + Shift + N

If it works, go back to the regular browser and clear the cache. You can also use another supported browser.

However, if the issue persists, you can manually upload your bank transactions in QuickBooks. Here's how:

QuickBooks Online

  1. Go to the Banking menu and choose the Banking tab.
  2. Select the blue tile for the account you want to upload the transactions into.
  3. Select the +Link account button, click it and choose Upload from the file.

QuickBooks Self-Employed

  1. Go to the Gear icon and click Imports.
  2. Select Import older transactions for the account you want to add transactions to.
  3. Click Browse and find the file you downloaded from your bank. It's usually in your Downloads folder.
  4. Choose the file and click Open to start the import.
  5. Review the column headers and data. Make sure the Date, Description, and Amount columns on the CSV match the columns and order in QuickBooks. The other column headers can be in any order.
  6. Select Continue to complete the import.

Here's an article for more information about the process: Manually uploading transactions into QuickBooks Online.

Once connected, you can check out these articles for guidance. These contain a step-by-step process on how to categorize your transactions to put them in the correct accounts and reconcile your account flawlessly:

Thank you, I tried to locate the AMEX BUSINESS CHECKING bank option in the "Add an account" menu and there was no AMEX BUSINESS CHECKING option.

Are you sure that it's an available bank option?

Also, kindly note that I am inquiring here because manually uploading transactions has been time-consuming, so I do not want to manually handle transactions anymore.

Please advise,

Kaila

Very happy with my American Express Business Checking, but I can't understand the slowness of QuickBooks syncing with this bank.

This is not what we want you to experience, @KBrasil.

I know how you would want to sync your American Express Business Checking account to QuickBooks Online (QBO). However, this bank is currently not yet supported by Intuit.

Updates to our online banking procedures, such as support for banks not connected to us, are handled by our engineers. However, we are unable to estimate the amount of time it might take, and there is no certainty that an agreement with American Express Business Checking will be established. Since they are still working on it internally, we are unable to offer any additional details at this time.

With this, I'd recommend requesting support for your bank. Here's how:

  1. Go to Banking.
  2. Click on Connect account.
  3. Search for the name of your financial institution or type American Express Business Checking.
  4. Scroll down and click on Still can't find your bank?
  5. Enter your bank's web address (URL).
  6. Click on Request.

As a workaround,  you can manually upload the transactions from your bank's website and download them from there.

Additionally, you may utilize these articles for future use in reviewing downloading and credit card transactions to put them in the correct accounts:

I am requesting support for Amex Business checking also... Just submitted the request.

February 19, 2023

I was actually able to get this to work by selecting American Express (Banking) and entering my AMEX login in information..

Works for me too with AMEX Business Checking! Thanks for updating about this.

So glad they seem to have finally added integration for AMEX fully.

Can QB please just admit that this is the result of some corporate or interpersonal conflict between Intuit and Amex? It seems disingenuous at this point to keep telling customers that "this just isn't fixed yet". No company (AMEX) in their right mind would launch a business checking account that can't be used with Quickbooks, so either Amex doesn't want it to happen, or Intuit doesn't from a strategy level (or the teams at both companies just can't work well together).

Please go to AMEX chat and ask the representative to submit a complaint that this feature needs to be added in a more timely manner. They need to hear from users that we want this feature.
