I am attempting to export a CSV from American Express for older transactions. However the import fails without giving any description. Any suggestions by chance?

We'll can follow your bank’s steps to import older transactions as a CSV file in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE), term56. Let us guide you through the process.

Your financial institution may not have specific instructions for QBSE and that's ok as long as you download your transactions as a CSV. Here's how to export transactions from your bank:

  1. Sign in to your bank’s website.
  2. Follow your bank’s steps to download your transactions as a CSV file. This is usually a button or link on your account page.
  3. Set the date range for at least one day before the oldest transaction in the account in QuickBooks.
  4. Follow any on-screen instructions to finish the download.

To learn more about this one, check out this article: Add older transactions to QuickBooks Self-Employed. Then, ensure your CSV file is formatted correctly to import your data in QBSE. Here's how:

  1. Open QBSE in a web browser. Then, click the Gear icon.
  2. Tap Imports.
  3. Choose the account you want to add the transactions into, then click Import older transactions under Action.
  4. Click Browse and find the file you downloaded from your bank.
  5. Select the file and hit Open to start the import.
  6. Review the column headers and data. Make sure the DateDescription, and Amount columns on the CSV match the columns and order in QuickBooks.
  7. Hit Continue to complete the import.

Moreover, here's an article to help you learn how to categorize the transactions you download from your bank or enter into QuickBooks: Categorize transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.
