Fresh start with banking

Hi All!

I am reaching out since we've been using QB desktop for a while now and just updated to QB online. When upgrading, we wanted keep our Vendor, Customers, Items, and history of Estimates, Invoices and Purchase Orders; but also wanted to start fresh with everything that had to do with banking, including reconciliations.

Unfortunately, after finishing with the migration and being told we would be able to do that, they in fact migrated all banking data.

Any tips to reset everything related to banking and reconciliation?

Welcome to the Community, manu22arri.

When migrating data from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QuickBooks Online (QBO), some transactions will move over and others won't.

Here's a list of what doesn't move to QBO:

  • Past reconciliation reports.
  • Bill discounts will be moved as vendor credits.
  • Credit card charges convert to expenses.
  • Finance charge invoices move to QBO as invoices.
  • Progress invoices don't move.
  • Item receipts convert to bills.
  • You may see some transactions like checks and invoices move as journal entries. This only occurs if tax rates were entered as flat rates instead of percentages or your original transaction can't be created again.
  • Reimbursable expense and unbilled time will move as billable expenses.

You can find more in-depth information about how data moves from QBDT to QBO in our Learn how features & data move article.

If you need to manually delete data, you can start by undoing any reconciliations you may need to undo:

  1. From the Chart of Accounts screen, find your account and click its View register option.
  2. Locate the transaction you need to edit.
  3. In its Status column (indicated by a checkmark), click on your box until it changes from "R" to blank.
  4. Select Save.

You can repeat this process to undo reconciliations. If you need to undo entire reconciliations, you can seek help from an accounting professional. If you already have an accountant added to your books, they can help undo reconciliations. After unreconciling, you can manually delete any transactions you need to remove from your books. You can also check our QuickBooks App Store for apps which may be able to make the process quicker.

You also have the option of deleting data and starting over. Afterwards, you can manually import data if necessary.
