Question

How do I correct an error I made when entering the ending balance on a reconciled account?

When inputting the ending balance to reconcile my account, I entered the wrong amount, somehow didn't catch it, then when on to make an adjustment to get it to balance instead of catching that I entered it wrong initially. I know, I know- bonehead move. It's only off 9 cents but I'd like to know if there is a way to edit an ending balance on an already reconciled account.

Hi, postonandson.

I'm glad to see you here in the Community space for bank reconciliation concerns. I'm here to help you edit the ending balance for the reconciled account in QuickBooks Online.

To review the original opening balance, you can follow these steps:

  1. Go to Accounting > Chart of Accounts.
  2. Find the account on the list and click the View register link.
  3. Search for the opening balance entry. It should have "Opening Balance Equity" in the Account column.
  4. Take note of the date and balance.

Once done, compare the opening balance with your real-life account. If it doesn't match with your bank records, you can correct the amount by following these steps:

  1. On the Bank register page, select the opening balance entry to expand the view.
  2. In the Deposit column, edit the balance so it matches your bank records.
  3. Tap Save.

I've added here an article to help you in case you encounter reconciliation issues: Fix issues when you're reconciling accounts.

Please don't hesitate to update me in this public space about editing the ending balance. I'll keep an eye on your thread. Have a good one!
