Question

How do I delete a duplicate savings account?

Somehow I added an additional savings account that was a duplicate. The QB support person told me to delete it, but it has now caused all sorts of problems, especially with transfers which went into the wrong savings. How do I change the transfers to the right savings account without altering the balance of the deleted account?

I'll help you delete the duplicate account and transfer the transactions to the correct account, healingpathwaysc.

Thank you for reaching out. I understand you wish to delete the duplicate Bank account, and I'm here to guide you through the process. Deleting your same bank account needs to make your Chart of accounts inactive.

Before making your Chart of accounts inactive, we need to manually transfer all the transactions associated with the account to the correct bank account. If the transactions were transferred using the Bank transactions feature, we could easily Undo them, but if they were transferred manually, we would need to edit the transaction From and To

Once all the transactions have been successfully transferred, we can make your Chart of accounts inactive, and you can proceed with deleting the other bank account.

To transfer your transactions to the correct account, here's how:

  1. Click the Transactions tab and choose Bank Transactions.
  2. Select the duplicate savings account, and under the Categorized tab, select the transactions and click Undo.
  3. Once done under the transactions, go to the For review and manually transfer the transaction to the correct bank account.

To manually edit the transactions from the manual upload, here's how:

  1. Click on the Transactions tab and then choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Select the Duplicate Savings account.
  3. Locate the transaction, click Edit, and move From and To the bank account.

Once all the transactions are moved to the correct account, we can delete your duplicate bank accounts from the Chart of Accounts. Here's how:

  1. Click on the Transactions tab and then choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate the same Savings account.
  3. Under the View register dropdown menu, click Make Inactive.

We can then start matching and categorizing transactions from your associated savings account, which is essential in ensuring accuracy and avoiding errors in your financial records. By reviewing each transaction and comparing it to the correct account, we can identify discrepancies or potential fraud and take appropriate action to address any issues. This process also helps streamline your financial management and makes tracking your expenses and savings easier. It is a good idea to monitor your savings account transactions and ensure they are appropriately categorized and matched to the correct accounts.

I also suggest reconciling your account regularly to avoid discrepancies: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.
