How do I get the chart of account options to populate in the drop downs when entering a transaction - this feature mysteriously disappeared?

You can perform some troubleshooting steps to isolate the cause of the unusual behavior of the QuickBooks Online (QBO) system, @beverlycauley. Let me guide you how.

Based on your description of the issue above, it seems that you're referring to the account selection drop-down when creating a sales or an expense transaction in QBO.

There are times that the browser is full of frequently accessed pages, thus causing some unusual responses of the program. Let's isolate this by logging into your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account using a private browser (incognito). Here's how:

  • Press Ctrl Shift (Google Chrome)
  • Ctrl Shift (Firefox)
  • Control Option (Safari)

Once signed in, enter a transaction. If you're able to get the Chart of Accounts options to populate in the drop-down, return to your regular browser and clear its cache and cookies. This will refresh the system and remove the older data that cause viewing and performance issues. However, if the issue persists, I'd recommend using other supported browsers.

In the meantime, I'm adding this article to further guide you in managing your transactions in QBO: Help Articles. It includes topics about banking, income and expenses, and reports and accounting to name a few.

Please let me know if you have other concerns. I'm just around to help. Take care always.

Welcome to the Community, @MichelleDav.

It seems that you're having issues with the selection dropdown when creating a new transaction in your chart of accounts. Don't worry, I'm here to help you sort this out.

We can verify and rebuild data in your company file. This fixes errors and other issues you're experiencing in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). To do this, follow the steps below.

  1. Go to the File menu.
  2. Select Utilities.
  3. Click Verify Data. Then, select OK to close all windows.

If there are still problems with your company file, you'll have to rebuild it.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Files, then select Utilities.
  2. Choose Rebuild Data, and then click OK.
  3. Tap OK to make a backup to prevent data loss along the process.
  4. Click OK to continue the rebuild process.

For a more detailed process, check out this article: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.

Once done, you may restart the program and check if you're now able to select the dropdown and create a new transaction.

Keep me posted about the result. I'll be here if you need any assistance with QuickBooks-related issues. Take care always!
