Question

How do I track against a deposit someone has made by inadvertant overpayment?

I have a client that significantly overpaid for the monthly services I provided. Upon discussions with them they have said they will just bill against it as a credit vs. having me send it back. How can I track this in my books in a way that is easy to understand what happened, is the only way to do this through journal entries?

I can help you handle this overpayment in QuickBooks Online, fspriggs-spriggs.

I can walk you through applying the credit to an invoice. Here's how:

  1. Go to + New and select Receive payment.
  2. Select the customer, then the credit, and the invoice.
  3. Select Save and New or Save and Close.

Once done, apply for the credit to a new invoice. Here are the steps:

  1. Go to + New and select Receive payment.
  2. Create the invoice.
  3. Select + New. Then select Receive payment.
  4. Select the credit and then Save and New or Save and Close.

Here's the article you can refer to on how to handle customer's overpayment in QBO: Handle a customer credit or overpayment in QuickBooks Online.

I'll be around to help if you need further assistance.
