How to change a transaction type on account that is reconciled

I did a transfer from one account to another and did not mark it as transfer.  Now it is showing up as a deposit on income.  The account was reconciled.  Is there a way to change the type?  I saw a place to do it, but it indicates it may put me out of balance.  I only need to change the transaction type from deposit to transfer.

I'd like to start by welcoming you here in the Community, AHosack. Allow me to help with your question about correcting your bookkeeping records in QuickBooks Online.

For now, there is no direct option to change the type of transaction in QBO. However, there's a workaround that I'd like to share.

First, change the status of the transaction from reconciled to unreconciled so you can delete it. Here's how:

  1. Go back to the bank register and look for the transaction.
  2. Proceed to the Reconcile and Banking Status column.
  3. Keep clicking the R status until it becomes blank. This signifies that it's already unreconciled.

Next, delete the deposit so you can recreate it as a transfer. Let me show you how:

  1. Click the transaction in your bank register.
  2. Choose the Delete button.
  3. Select Yes to confirm that you want to delete it.

Lastly, recreate the transaction as a transfer to correct your bookkeeping records. A step-by-step instruction is provided in this article: Transfer Funds Between Accounts.

Also, don't forget to change the status back to reconciled to make sure the balances would remain accurate.
