I closed a bank account with Bank of America. Now all of my data is missing because the account is not there. How can i recover this data? Thanks, John

Restoring the missing transactions from Bank of America is essential to ensure your financial record is accurate. Allow me to jump in and assist with your concern about online banking, John.

Once an account is disconnected through online banking, any uncategorized transactions will be removed. However, any transactions that have already been matched and categorized will remain in your bank register.

Since the account is already closed, we can no longer add it back to redownload the transactions.

As an alternative, I recommend requesting a CSV file of your banking transactions from your financial institution. Then, import it into QuickBooks Online (QBO) to ensure all your transactions are accounted for.

I'd be glad to share the step-by-step instructions.

First, each bank formats CSV files differently. You can edit it and make sure it follows the 3-column or 4-column format that's acceptable in QBO.

Additional details and sample screenshots are provided in this article: Format CSV Files In Excel To Get Bank Transactions Into QuickBooks.

Once formatted, follow these steps on how to import the file:

  1. Go to the Transactions menu and select Bank transactions.
  2. Click the drop-down list beside Link account▼, then click Upload from file.
  3. Select Drag and drop or select files and select the file you downloaded from your bank.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Select the account you want to upload the transactions into. Then, choose Continue.
  6. Follow the onscreen steps to match the columns on the file with the correct fields in QuickBooks. Then, choose Continue.
  7. Select the transactions you like to import and select Continue.
  8. Click Yes, then choose Done.
