Question

I edited transactions in my checking account register, didn't like the result, so I restored to a week earlier, but the changes I made were still in the account!

I backed up my company because I wanted to re-categorize about 1000 bank transfers as either 'Sales' or 'Refunds' and also delete about 3000 sales receipts to make my books more accurate. So I unlinked the transactions from my checking account and re-categorized them, essentially re-importing them but assigning them to either sales or refunds. But it got messy, so I decided to revert to an older state before I made those changes. But when I restored to a week before making the changes, the checking register in the restored version had kept all the re-categorized transactions, which made my checking register off by about $1.5M, and my reconciled checking account was no longer reconciled. It's a total mess!  My understanding of a restore is that it will return the books to the way the were at that time, but that is not what happened.  What am I missing? Please help!

I'm glad to see you here in the Community space for bank reconciliation concerns, @robert160. I'll help you get through this so you can proceed to finish reconciling in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Yes, I agree with you that the books will be restored to their previous state on the restoration date. However, there might be some data that can't be backed up. As mentioned in the article:  Backup and restore your QuickBooks Online Advanced Company.

Occasionally, QuickBooks may exhibit unusual behavior due to browser issues, and maintenance on the financial institution's website often prevents viewing specific transactions in QuickBooks.

To start the process, please log into your account and attempt the activity again using a private window. The keyboard shortcuts for different browsers are as follows:

The keyboard shortcuts for different browsers are as follows:

  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Google Chrome: CTRL + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge: CTRL + Shift + H

After clearing the cache, make sure to restart your browser. If it works, return to your regular browser and clear your browser's history to start afresh. We also suggest using a different supported browser because the QuickBooks version you're utilizing now may have a temporary malfunction.

Regarding the reconciliation, I'm afraid the reconciliation data is not included in the backup and cannot be restored. Hence, they will have to perform the reconciliation process again. You can watch the video tutorial in this article: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.

I'm adding a couple of related articles below to guide you further with the process:
