Question

I have an account listed as a bank account when it should be an expense account. How do I change it?

You've come to the right place for help, @userchristypt.

I can share some steps on how you can change the account type listed in your account.

Certainly, you can change the account type in your Chart of Accounts from a bank account to an expense.

This will have an impact on QuickBooks' accounting and reporting. Furthermore, it will not allow changes for accounts with subaccounts and/or recurring templates. You may also encounter several errors when doing it. Therefore, it's better if the account has no transactions when it's converted.

Here's how you can do it:

  1. Open the Accounting menu and go to the Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate the account you want to modify.
  3. Click on the drop-down from the Action column.
  4. Select Edit.
  5. From the drop-down, choose the expense Account Type that you want to show.
  6. Once done, hit Save and Close.
