Question

Is anyone having trouble when they transfer an account from QB 2020 to QB 2023?

When we updated our QB desktop 2020 Books to QB desktop 2023 and tried to reconcile, the balance on the bank reconciliation was off.  It said this may happen because of switching from one version to another.  This is not acceptable.  Someone needs to tell us why this is happening.

I got you covered. I want to ensure you'll be able to reconcile your account in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

In QBDT, the beginning balance issue may be a result of converting the file from another version. This is because the reconciliation works differently for other programs. Some entries may get unreconciled which affects the opening balance. No worries, we have several ways how to correct it.

We can start creating the opening balance again if this is the first time you're reconciling the account. To do so, we can enter a journal entry. Then, reconcile it. Here's how:

  1. Go to Company and select Make General Journal Entries.
  2. Enter the date to the correct statement date of your beginning balance.
  3. Next, select the account you want in the Account drop-down and input the correct opening balance in the Debit column.
  4. Then, click Opening Balance Equity and select Save.
  5. After that navigate to the Banking tab and select Reconcile.
  6. Choose the account you want in the Account field.
  7. Then, input the statement date and ending balance that matches the journal entry.
  8. Next, click Continue.
  9. In Deposits and Other Credits, select the journal entry. The amount shown for the Difference should now be zero.
  10. Once ready, select Reconcile Now.

After that, you can run any of the following reports to resolve the incorrect balance:

Once opened, compare any of this report to past statements to your financial institution. Then, to fix the discrepancy, you may need to change or input the entries again. For the detailed steps, go to the Correct discrepancy section of this link: Fix beginning balance issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

When ready, you can now reconcile your account. To have a guide in performing the process, read this article: Learn the reconcile workflow in QuickBooks.

Also, the program will automatically generate a report after the session. You can use this as a guide in performing future reconciliation. Here's how to pull it up:

  1. Navigate to the Reports menu and select Reports Center.
  2. Next, search and open a Previous Reconciliation report.
  3. Then, click the account you reconciled, then either DetailSummary, or Both

I'm always here ready to lend a hand if you have any other concerns managing your account in QuickBooks. Have a great week and stay safe.
