Paid a personal credit card by mistake with the business checking in 2021. Need to find a way to fix it.

I made a credit card payment for a personal credit card with my business checking account by mistake back in 2021. They were both Capital One cards and I hit the wrong bank when scheduling the payment. I'm sorry to say I had not reconciled the bank account in a long time. I now need to fix this so I can reconcile the bank account. What can I do?  Thank for any suggestions.

It's great to have you here today, JSD2.

Let me help you create a journal entry in QuickBooks Online (QBO), so you can enter debits and credits manually to balance your books.

In QBO, you can use journal entries (JE) as a last resort for recording transactions. Since the payment was made years ago, I'd recommend creating a JE so you can force your books to balance in specific ways.

To do that:

  1. Go to + New and select Journal entry.
  2. Select an account on the first line under the Account field. Enter the amount in the appropriate column depending on whether you debit or credit the account.
  3. On the second line, choose the other account you're transferring funds. Enter the same amount in the opposite column, depending on whether you entered a debit or credit on the first line.
  4. Ensure the amounts are the same for both Credit and Debit columns. It means the accounts are in balance.
  5. You may enter information in the Memo field, so you'll know why the JE is made.
  6. Click Save and close.

For further assistance, it's best to seek advice from your accountant to ensure the accuracy of your accounts. If you're not affiliated with one, you can visit our Find a ProAdvisor page to look for one nearby.
