Question

When I updated my bank transactions it also created duplicate accounts for the same bank accounts. How do I delete the duplicate accounts?

I have 2 of every account after updating on mobile app. How do I delete the duplicate accounts?

I want to ensure this is taken care of, @mike-truesdell.

 

When removing the duplicate account, we can either merge or make the other account inactive in QuickBooks Online (QBO). 

 

Merging the accounts will combine both transactions. Ensure to save the reconciliation reports before doing so.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Go to the Accounting menu, and select Chart of accounts.
  2. Find the account you want to keep and then select the drop-down arrow in the Action column.
  3. Select Edit to check and note the details like Name, and Detail Type. Check if the Is subaccount option is marked and remember the parent account associated.
  4. Click Cancel to return to the Chart of accounts.
  5. Choose the account you want to remove and select the drop-down arrow in the Action column. Select Edit and make sure to remove the symbol in the name of the account for a seamless merge.
  6. Change the Name and Detail Type mark Is subaccount as appropriate.
  7. Hit Save.
  8. Select Yes to confirm.

 

When making the account inactive, if it has a balance, QuickBooks will create a journal entry to zero it out. Please know that the transactions in the account will remain on your records and will still affect your reports. I'll guide you on how.

 

  1. Go to the Accounting menu, and select Chart of accounts.
  2. Click the View register drop-down arrow.
  3. Select Make inactive.
  4. Hit Yes to confirm.

 

To review the inactive accounts, click the mini Gear icon above. Place a checkmark in the Include inactive checkbox.

Making the duplicate account inactive doesn't fix the issue with having the duplicate transactions on my reports like Profit and Loss.  There must be a way to exclude inactive accounts from reports so my reports are accurate.

Hi there, @ToddBaum1.

 

Let me help you exclude the inactive accounts in the Profit & Loss report.

 

We must select the Non-zero in the Show non-zero or active only field so the inactive accounts won't show in the report. Note: This feature is unavailable in QuickBooks Online (QBO) Simple Start.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Go to Reports. Then, run the Profit & Loss report.
  2. Click the Show non-zero or active-only dropdown field.
  3. Select Non-zero to both Show rows and Show columns.
  4. Once done, click Run report.
