Why can I no longer type an account name or number into the Account field on bank deposits?

For years, when entering bank deposits, I have chosen a revenue account in the account field (the deposit detail) by typing the number or name and selecting it. Now the list only shows asset accounts and when I type in a revenue account, it says it can't find it. I now have to select "See and add more categories" and then navigate through the entire chart of accounts to select the one I want for each detail line in the deposit. And it no longer shows the account number - just the name. We have Account Numbers enabled in our settings for the chart of accounts.

Welcome to the Community, @nb76. Let me share some information about tracking deposits in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

 

QuickBooks allows you to type in the account number and name when selecting an account from the Account field or dropdown.

 

As you mentioned, the number of your accounts no longer exists when going through your Chart of Accounts. It's the reason why you can't see the revenue account when typing in the number. At this time, you can modify your revenue account and ensure to add the number from there.

 

  1. Locate the account from the Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click on Edit under Action.
  3. Enter the number from the Account Number field.
  4. Hit Save.

 

Once your account is in place, you're now ready to record and make your deposits.

This is not helpful. When I do that, the account name is already in the form because the account has had a number all along. There is nothing to change. I seriously cannot understand why there would be a change that just creates a ton more work.

I'll ensure you can type an account name/number into the Account field, nb76.

 

The QuickBooks' unusual behavior, like being unable to type an account name or number into the Account field is sometimes caused by an outdated cache in your browser.

 

You can use a private or incognito window to verify it from there. Please use these keyboard shortcuts:

 

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl Shift + N
  • Safari 11 or newer: ⌘ Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl Shift P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl Shift P

 

If you can successfully type an account number or name, I suggest you clear the cache of your main browser. This can start the system fresh. Also, ensure you're using a supported browser
