I've come to help you solve the error you've received while linking your bank account with QuickBooks Online (QBO), @bewleysblackrock. This way, you're able to download your most recent transactions and manage them accordingly.

The banking error 101 generally occurs due to the synchronization problem between your bank account and QBO. Here are some of the possible reasons for the error:

  • The bank is performing system maintenance.
  • There are notifications on your bank’s website that need your attention.

To resolve this, you'll first have to log into your bank's website to check if you're able to log in without getting any errors. Then, make sure your account is active.

After that, check your account page for messages or alerts (i.e., terms and conditions) that need your attention. Once you make changes on the website (i.e. login credentials and account info), you'll have to update QuickBooks as well. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Banking menu.
  2. Select  the blue tile for your account.
  3. Click the Edit icon.
  4. Choose either Edit sign-in info or Edit account info.
  5. Enter all the necessary details and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

I've attached a screenshot below that shows the first four steps.

Once fixed, your recent transactions will automatically download. All you have to do is to review and/or match them to the existing entries in QuickBooks. For the step-by-step guide, kindly refer to this article: Categorise online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online. It also contains instructions about excluding personal and duplicate transactions.

Additionally, I'd recommend reconciling your accounts every month. This is to monitor your income, expenses, and detect any possible errors accordingly. To learn more about this, you can refer to this article: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online. It includes information about editing completed reconciliations.

I want to make sure I've got everything covered. You can also share with me the name of your financial institution you're having issues with. Any further details are much appreciated so I can provide an exact solution.

Let me know how it goes in the comments below. If you have other banking concerns or inquiries about managing your transactions in QBO, I'm just around to help. Take care always.
