Question

When I migrated from QB Desktop to QB Online I do not have an opening balance figure on my bank account. How can I put one in? I do not wish to connect my bank account.

Hello, katie.

I'm here to help you how to enter your opening balance in QuickBooks Online.

Since QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online are two different products, the conversion process may cause differences in balances and other data due to product limitations and variations. This may result in missing entries, details, and incorrect opening balances.

To enter the opening balance, there are two factors we need to consider. First, if there are no transactions in the associated account, we can edit the account and enter the opening balance amount.

A second consideration is if there is an associated transaction on the said account, we can use the Journal entry and manually mark the Journal entry as reconciled (R) on the transaction.

Here's how:

  1. Click the + New.
  2. Choose a Journal entry.
  3. Enter a date that comes before the oldest transaction in the account. This will be the opening balance date.
  4. On the first row of the Account column, select the dropdown menu to choose the account you want to enter the opening balance for.
  5. Add a note in the Description field so you know what the journal entry is for.
  6. Select the dropdown on the second row of the Account column and choose Opening Balance Equity.
  7. Use your bank statements to enter the balance of your real-life account on the date you picked as the opening balance. You'll need to enter both a debit and a credit to keep things accurate. Enter the debits and credits based on the type of account you entered on the first row.

For more details about the steps, please refer to this article: What to do if you didn't enter an opening balance in QuickBooks Online.
