How to Look Your Best on Camera

Like many people, many business owners are finding themselves on Zoom or video calls way more in the past two years than ever. Although it can be taxing, it’s a great way to interact with partners and clients, while keeping in touch with your team. I’m here today with some tips on how to make sure you look your best on camera!

Use a ring light or opt for natural light
Natural light will always be your best bet so finding a spot with a nice amount of windows will have you looking refreshed. If you don’t have access to a bright room,  look into getting a ring light. This is what a lot of online/social media influencers use and it helps you look professional and gives the video a great look.

Camera position
It may feel natural to be really close to your computer, but giving yourself a good arms length is ideal. Laptop cameras tend to be a wider angle so this distance prevents features being distorted. It also puts your face and body in great proportions within the screen.

Background
Some people are fortunate to have a designated office space for meetings and their work. If you are someone that is in your kitchen or living room, don’t forget about using a background! There are a number of them and it can help keep the focus on you and not your kid or dog behind you. Play around and see what color or scene you like best.

Those are my top 3 but there are plenty more. How many of you have your own tips about video calls? Let us know in the comments!

I'd actually not rely on natural light, other than for a quick meeting and the light happens to be right.  If you're on meetings all day, the light will not be "right" from morning to the EOD.  Some natural light works, but have it offset with something like a Ring Light or a couple of lights set off to either side of you.  Just look for shadows and then move one or the other light to make things look more natural.

If you are in Sales and are having Virtual Meetings with your clients, consider raising your notebook computer.  There are a number of small organizer shelves that will raise your notebook 5-8".  You'll also want to get a keyboard and mouse if you do this so you're not always having to type up on a "shelf" with the elevated computer.

If you're driving home a point or trying to connect...   Learn where your camera is and LOOK AT IT, not the picture of the other person on the screen.  You'll be looking down when trying to connect.  Granted you need to look at the screen most of the time.  But remember when to look at the camera for impact.
