At QuickBooks, new innovations and improvements take place every single day. Some are tiny tweaks that fine-tune your QuickBooks experience. Others are game-changing developments with the power to transform the way you manage your business accounts.
Each one of our advances is inspired by our customers. We spend literally thousands of hours every year talking to small business owners and the self-employed to get a deep understanding of the challenges they face. Your insights help us decide on our customer priorities for the year ahead. So what have been the innovation highlights of the past 12 months?
An exceptional (and easy) Making Tax Digital solution
If you pay VAT you’ll have noticed our all-inclusive suite of Making Tax Digital features that make MTD for VAT easy for you. From automatic VAT checks with VAT error checker to bridging software for spreadsheets users, it’s all part of your subscription.
Leading the way with Open Banking
When you connect your bank to QuickBooks you save hours on data entry and reduce manual errors. The great news is the reliability and security of those connections is about to be transformed. As part of the UK’s new Open Banking regulations, we’ve been upgrading our bank feeds, one provider at a time, with the challenger banks next in line. QuickBooks customers can now connect to Revolut and Monzo, with Starling and Tide coming soon. It means greater confidence and control for our customers and brings us a step closer to making manual data entry a thing of the past for everyone.
Automatic mileage tracking
If driving is part of your business, you’ll know how difficult it can be to track every trip. Now you can do it automatically through the QuickBooks Online mobile app. The feature is already a massive hit with our QuickBooks Self-Employed users as it instantly drives up deductions for tax time.
Even smarter support
At QuickBooks we’re rather proud of our award-winning customer care. With free phone support and access to chat 24/7 it goes well above industry standards. This year we’ve harnessed the power of machine learning to identify a customer’s needs in seconds. Then we automatically direct them to the help they need, for faster, more effective trouble shooting. We’ve also introduced SmartLook which lets you share your screen with an expert you can see.
Project Management tool for our Plus customers
It’s never been easier for QuickBooks Plus customers to stay on top of their business. The new Projects feature tracks income, expenses and profitability for a specific piece of work, helping you stay organised and run project-specific reports from a single dashboard.
An automated payroll option
QuickBooks customers have been asking for a payroll solution with additional features. So earlier this year we launched QuickBooks Online Advanced Payroll. The new product is packed with time-saving features, allowing you to run payroll automatically, easily manage pensions and give employees access so they can input their hours and request time off.

Of course, there’s plenty more in the pipeline, including the launch of our advanced receipt capture feature. It means you can automatically upload and organise expenses with no additional charges.
