How to eliminate sub-items from inventory and keep only parent item

When I started my company I thought it was a good idea to create sub-items for an inventory item. Example: Yarn 1 has 150 different colors so I created 150 sub-items for inventory management. Now I have found a better software for inventory management and my bookkeeping is now so time consuming. If I already have quantities in the sub-items I can't just delete or make an item inactive until the quantity is 0. How can I "clean" my inventory items so I can only keep the parent item? any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, you're right, @elopez9123. You can only delete or make items inactive if the quantity on hand is zeroed out and they're not used in any transactions. This ensures the balance of your inventory asset account matches across different reports. Let's explore this in more detail.

If you still wish to eliminate sub-items with a quantity on hand, you can only make them inactive after making an inventory adjustment to reduce the quantity on hand to zero.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Lists and select Item List.
  2. Right-click the sub-items you want to make inactive.
  3. Select Make Item Inactive.

Another workaround is to merge the sub-items to the parent item to combine al the quantity on hand. To do this, you'll need to make the sub-items as a parent item first.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Lists and select Item List.
  2. Right-click the sub-items you want to remove and click Edit Item.
  3. Rename the sub-item the same with the parent item and uncheck the Subitem of checkbox.
  4. Select OK to save changes.
  5. Click Yes with the prompt to merge.
