Question

Have entered the TD1 information for all of my employees. One employee has federal taxes, CPP and EI deductions. Another employee with same TD1 info has no deductions?

Hello lankimle,

Great job keeping an eye on your employee's deductions and making sure that you have everything set up correctly. Ensuring you have the right details is important for all parties involved. I'll help you get started with figuring this out.

Even when employees have the same TD1 information, there are certain things to be taken into consideration when it comes to whether the pay cheque will have deductions taken off. EI should always be calculated, however CPP's calculations are dependent and can change based off a few things.

Your employee's age is a good place to start looking. For instance, if they're too young (under 18) or too old (over 65) to have deductions taken from their pay cheque, the system won't deduct those funds. Make sure your employees' birth dates are entered correctly on the TD1 for accurate calculations.

If all that is correct, the next thing to consider is whether your employee made enough in that pay period to have deductions taken off their cheque. If the employee makes too little in the pay period, then the government, and therefore QuickBooks Online's payroll, doesn't deduct CPP from them.

Here's a great article from the CRA that goes over deductions and remittances for payroll. It gives information about employee ages, payroll tax tables, and other important details. Check it out: Employers' Guide—Payroll Deductions and Remittances

If you still need help or have questions, don't be afraid to get in touch with support. A payroll support agent can look up your account and go over your setup in detail to verify that everything is calculating as it should and let you know the options if it's not. Here's how to reach us.
