Welcome to the QuickBooks Community, frankfresin234-g!

It's great to have you join us, and I hope that QuickBooks Online is meeting your needs as a business owner or bookkeeper so far. It sounds like you may just be getting started in the software since you'd like to work on last year's return, and I'd be happy to point you in the right direction for getting on your way with this.

Having a bit more detail of what sort of return you're looking to work with would be helpful here to ensure that I provide you with the right steps. That's okay! I have an idea of what you could mean. Oftentimes when people are looking to work with prior year's returns, they're referring to sales tax, so that's what I'll use as a starting point.

When you configure sales tax in QuickBooks Online, the returns will default to the current year, but there is a way to work with the prior year's data if you'd like to file those returns. Here's how.

  1. Select Taxes from the left menu.
  2. Choose Prepare return for the tax return available.
  3. Use the date fields to adjust to the prior year.
  4. Continue filing sales tax.

Doing this will display the last year's information for you. If you're not seeing the option to change the Start date of the return, that means you've already filed a return for sales tax. The program works chronologically with this information, so it won't be able to produce return information for a period prior to the first filing.

In these cases, you can request that QuickBooks Online's technical support team undoes the filing for you or you can have your accountant undo it if you have an accountant user on your books. They'd use the steps here: How do I un-file a sales tax return? Please note that only accountant users have access to that feature.

If you don't have an accountant and would like one, use the Find a pro to help button in the My Accountant tab to access our directory. That tab also gives you the option to invite your accountant as a user to the program.

To have a member of our technical support team undo the filing on your behalf, contact our phone, chat, or social media support teams. We'll need to collect some account details from you, and these options will allow us to have a private conversation to do so.

Schedule a Callback or start a Chat: click (?)Help in the upper right in QuickBooks Online > type and enter "Contact support" into the QB Assistant > click Contact Us > explain your situation > click Let's Talk > choose Get a callback or Start a Chat.

Social MediaFacebookTwitter, and Instagram.
Support hours are from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET.

You can also use one of those options to discuss your situation with a member of our support team if what I've described isn't it, or if you'd prefer, leave a reply on this thread with what sort of return you're trying to work with. We're here to help!
