Question

I am trying to undo a tax filing and it says to delete payment first but there wasn't a payment recorded. How do I fix this?

Hi there, @civicaccounting.

When undoing a sales tax filing in QuickBooks Online (QBO), there shouldn't be any payment attached to it. Otherwise, the system won't allow you to undo the process. Since there is no payment recorded under the Payments section of your sales tax, you can follow these steps to unfile your return.

  1. Sign in to your QBO account.
  2. Click on Taxes at the left pane, then Sales Tax.
  3. Select the Returns tab.
  4. Locate the sales tax filing that you'd like to un-file.
  5. Under the Action column, open the drop-down menu to view options.
  6. Select Undo filing.
  7. A window will appear asking Are you sure you want to go back? Review the information displayed and click Undo filing.
  8. A notification will appear next to your open filing, highlighting the date that the return was reopened.

Please know that you'll only be able to un-file the most recent sales tax filing. To un-file a historic filing, you'll need to un-file in reverse date order to reach the desired filing. Additionally, you'll receive an error message if you try to un-file after closing the books. In this case, you'll need to temporarily re-open the books to un-file.

If you're still asked to delete a payment with no payment recorded, you can perform the basic browser troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue.

First, sign in to QuickBooks using a private window and perform the steps from there. It's the best place to check browser-related issues when using QuickBooks. Here are the keyboard shortcuts to save you time:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl Shift N
  • Safari 11 or newer: ⌘ Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl Shift P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl Shift P

If it works fine, go back to your original browser and clear its cache to start fresh. You can also use another supported and up-to-date browser to narrow down the result.

Once done and you're ready to file your return again, use this link as your guide: File your sales tax return and record tax payment in QuickBooks Online.
