Hello, I am wondering what to do regarding an employee who is outside of the primary province of the company when adding this employee's TD1 Form to Quickbooks Payroll (Canada). Under "Provincial Taxes" it says "We use the basic personal amount for the province in which your business is located as the default amount for NAME's provincial withholdings." -- And then under that it asks for me to input the number. It currently says that it has selected the Province of Manitoba, however I am wondering if it is okay to put in the deduction amount for a different province in this section. I have setup work locations, but also cannot figure out how to add this new employee to the new work location.

Hi finance-shovelle,

Setting up the correct provincial takes is an integral part of running payroll and making sure the correct information shows on the T4's. I'd be happy to point you in the right direction for this.

QuickBooks Online makes running payroll easy to help you save time and get you back to business. When setting up an employee's taxes it is best to contact the CRA in order to make sure you're entering the correct information. You can contact them by following this link. Another option is to get in touch with your accountant and inquire which taxes you should be using for your employee.  If you don't have an accountant no worries, we have your back. In your QuickBooks Online account you can go to My Accountant>Find a pro to help to find one in your area.

Once they let you know which to enter you can follow these steps on how to set up your employee's TD1 amounts:

  1. Select Employee Centre under the Employees menu.
  2. Right-click on the individual employee and select the Edit Employee option.
  3. Click Payroll Info on the left-side menu.
  4. Click Taxes and TD1… in the top-right corner.
  5. Enter the correct amount in the Federal TD1 field.

Have a great day!
