Question

Using quickbooks online, I want to prepare my tax return for Nov 2019-Oct 2020, but when I try, it defaults to Nov 2020-Oct 2021. How do I change the date?

Hi userel-tremblay26,

I know how important it's to have an accurate reporting period when preparing your tax return. QuickBooks Online gives you control over your books and flexibility to adjust the entire period of your first tax return. I'll be happy to share more on this.

After you enable the Sales Tax Center in the software, QuickBooks automatically presents the dates of your most recent tax period. However, you have the flexibility to modify these dates as needed to filter and insert your desired period. To do so, go to Taxes > Sales Tax > Locate the return to edit under Filings > Select Prepare return > Edit the Start date and End date.

When you'll be ready to click on Mark as filed, the software will then display your new chosen dates in the Filings tab and will automatically present the next return for you based on your selected filing frequency. At that point, you'll only be able to change the End date moving forward. The Start date can only be changed on your first return in QuickBooks. For more details on how to manage sales tax returns in the program, check out this article: File sales tax

I hope this helps! Feel free to reach out if you have more questions.
