Question

Vacation Pay

In our construction business, the employee's work hours are usually 9 hour days so they work 45 hours/week.  They are paid by the hour and are not unionized.  When they take vacation pay, do I give them 9 hours/day to match their workdays or do I stick with 8 hours which is a normal work day?  I'm thinking 9 hours but I want to make sure.

Also, same scenario with stat holidays.  My boss wants me to give 8 hours for stat holidays.  Any thoughts or legalities around this?

Thanks

Hello Diane18,

You've got an interesting question here, and I can see why you'd be asking about it to make sure you get the details right since it's a bit of a different situation. Knowing how to handle this from a government requirement perspective will let you know how you should be approaching this when recording entries in QuickBooks Desktop. I want to make sure you have the correct direction here.

My first recommendation here is to check on the CRA website to see what resources you can find out about this sort of situation. For instance, I found a page called Vacation pay and public holidays that may lead to more information on how to handle this, but even if that specific page doesn't help, there may be other resources on the CRA website that can. It may be worth checking in with specific labour entities as well to ensure that you're meeting the requirements in these situations.

Otherwise, this is another great opportunity to check in with your accountant. Even if they're not sure right off the bat what the answer is, they should know where to find that information for you or where to direct you in this instance. I know you're already working with an accountant, but for anyone else that may come across our thread, I'd just like to share the Find an Accountant page in case they don't have one and would like one.

As you know, other users in the community may have additional insight into this for you and leave you a comment. I hope that what I've shared with you so far is able to get you off to a good start nonetheless.

Enjoy the rest of your day. :)
