Question

Can I edit an existing supplier to be a customer instead? The Treasurer before me coded customers as "suppliers" and I would like to change their designation.

Hi k-lton,

Welcome! Reaching out in the QuickBooks Community is a great way to get the answers you're looking for. I can see that you're looking to make some changes in your QuickBooks Online account. Let me explain the options available to you.

QuickBooks Online has comprehensive Supplier and Customer modules. However, they're not able to connect in the way you're asking for. You'll need to Add New Customers, and Make the Suppliers inactive. Keep in mind that the names will need to be slightly different, like adding a 1 to the ones you're going to make inactive.

Depending on your comfort level with exporting/importing, you could export the supplier list and import it as a customer list. Exporting the lists and importing them into QuickBooks Online are explained in this article; Move your lists to QuickBooks Online.

If you have any other questions, I'm here to help. Have a good night!

I seem to have a problem with QB automatically creating Suppliers instead of customers.  Is there a way to control defaults so this does not keep happening?

Hi kevin90. Thanks for reaching out to us here. I'd like to learn more about the experience you're having so I can assist. Could you walk me through how the suppliers are being automatically created? Is this happening when you try to create a different transaction? Feel free to send screenshots for visual reference. I'll be on standby.
