How do I create a new detail type within expenses? The drop-down menu doesn't contain what I would like to track as an expense item

It's great to have you with us in the QuickBooks community! I'm happy to go over this with you.

 

With what you're describing, it sounds like you're trying to set up an expense account in QuickBooks Online and the drop-down menu for the Detail Type isn't showing you an option that fits what you need. I can see how being able to add more types would be useful, however, it's not an available option at this time.

 

I recommend working with the detail types available to find the best fit for what you need. You can also submit feedback to our product development team via the Gear icon in your account. Using the Feedback feature, you can enter your comments, which get passed on to the product team for consideration in future updates.
