Question

How to remove WET, Luxury Car Tax etc

I'm new to Quickbooks and a number of tax accounts - WET, Luxury Car Tax, FBT - have been added by default. How do I remove these from my chart of accounts? Attempting to inactivate them returns an error message - "You cannot change or delete this account as it is used by the system to track tax amounts.". However none of these are ticked in my tax settings and are irrelevant for my company, so why can I not delete them instead of having them clutter up my chart of accounts? This is not a problem I have had in MYOB or Xero.

I recognize how important it is to delete unnecessary accounts in your file, joshmerriman. I'm here to share some insights.

QuickBooks Online creates specific accounts by default. Other special accounts are created when certain features are turned on. Currently, deleting these accounts is unavailable in the program.

As a workaround, I'd recommend renaming the accounts into something you can use in your company. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate the account you'd like to delete.
  3. Click the drop-down menu under Action, then click Edit.
  4. Change the details in the account.
  5. Once done, click Save and Close.
  6. Repeat the process for the other accounts.

To find out which default account can be deleted, edited, or merged in the program, I'd suggest checking out this article: Manage Special Accounts in your Chart of Accounts.

I know the functionality to delete the default account would be beneficial to your business. I encourage sending a feature request directly to our Product Development team. This helps us improve your experience with the program. I'll show you how:

  1. Go to the Gear menu and then select Feedback.
  2. Type in your feature request in the description box.
  3. Once done, click on Next.

Also, you can track feature requests through the Customer Feedback for QuickBooks Online website.

To learn more about managing your accounts, please see this article: Learn About the Chart of Accounts.

Additionally, I've included an article that'll help you assign default tax codes to your accounts. This keeps your account organized: Assign Default GST Codes to your Chart of Accounts.

Please don't hesitate to get back on this thread. I'd be glad to assist you if you have other questions about managing your Chart of Accounts.
