Question

How do I re-assign an invoice issued and settled in the wrong tax year? I have been asked to 'park' the invoice in the Balance Sheet, from the Profit and Loss?

It was suggested that I change the date, but the client has the invoice in their books, so I dont know that its the most ethical or legal way?

Hello there, Louise.

I'm here to share insights about reassigning an invoice that was issued and settled in the wrong tax year in QuickBooks Online.

Editing the date on the invoice is a viable option. However, it's important to note that once a transaction has been closed and reconciled, it can't be modified to the correct tax year. This means that corrections can only be made to unreconciled periods.

As the impact of this transaction on your client's financial records can be significant, I recommended to seek advice from a qualified accountant. They can guide you on the proper and legal handling of the situation to ensure that your client's books remain accurate and compliant with tax regulations.

Additionally, it's important to note that the invoices in question will be reflected in both the Profit & Loss and the Balance Sheet report. In the P&L report, the invoices will be recorded as an Income, while they will appear as Accounts Receivable in the Balance Sheet report.

Furthermore, here's some articles that you can read to learn more about what you can do with invoices:

It will always be my pleasure to assist you if you have any further questions regarding managing your client's invoices and other transactions in QuickBooks Online. Have a wonderful day!
