Let's try to locate where's the missing invoice is on your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account, consultgreentree.

QBO automatically follows the numbering once you've created an invoice. Also, all Invoice transactions have a number assigned, whether it's manually entered or assigned by QuickBooks' automatic sequence. To search for the missing one, go to the Sales tab, then Invoices, and click the Invoice column header to sort by those numbers. You can also run the Audit Log report to find your invoice number 1042. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Under Tools, select Audit Log.
  3. On the Date section, select This year.
  4. Select Show only these events under Events.
  5. Choose Transactions.
  6. Click Apply.

If you've noticed that the invoice is not deleted, one transaction is out of order, or has the wrong number, you do have the ability to alter this sequence. Just turn on first the Custom transaction numbers feature to make it possible. It also helps to change the number of previous invoices. Let me show you how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Account and Settings under Your Company.
  3. In the Sales tab, enable the Custom transaction numbers feature under the Sales form content section.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Press Done.

Once done, we'll see an Invoice no. field where we can enter our own numbering preferences. We can also open the past invoices and modify the number.  With these instructions, you'll have total control over the sequence numbers for all of your transactions.
