Question

How can I add account number to the chart of accounts? Is there a way to do it automatically or do I need to type it manually in the name of the account?

Currently in the Chart of accounts there only names of the account. We need to have a separate field with account code for easier navigation. How and where we can add it? Let's say now in the chart of accounts we have written "Accounts Payable", but we want to have it "2302 Accounts Payable".

I've got some steps to help you add account numbers to your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

To begin with, you'll need to enable account numbers to add them to your chart of accounts and display them in reports and transactions. Here’s how to do that:

    1. Click on the Gear icon and select Accounts and Settings.
    2. In the Advanced section, choose Chart of Accounts.
    3. Toggle on Enable account numbers and check the box for Show account numbers.
    4. Click Save, and then Done.

Once done, we can now assign the account numbers manually. Here's how:

    1. Go to the Gear icon and select Chart of Accounts.
    2. Click Batch Edit above the Action column.
    3. Enter your account numbers in the Number column.
    4. Click Save to finalize your changes.

To see your accounts’ numbers, click the Gear icon at the top of the list in the Action column. Then, select Number.
