Question

I inactivated an account in the COA but it keeps "activating" itself and coming back into COA. What is causing this and how do I stop this?

The accounts in question are Sales and COGS. I am inactivating them because I have 2 Sales and 2 COGS accounts and I want to inactivate the unused one.

That's not quite right @yihuii-ho-. Glad you came here for support.

Since it is still popping up in your Chart of Accounts after inactivating, there might be a brief problem with your browser. There are times the outdated or corrupted site data in the browser causes runtime and unexpected behaviors error in the program. let's perform some troubleshooting steps to fix the issue. Let's start by logging in to your account using a private or incognito window. These are the shortcut keys:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Option + P

Then let's try inactivating them again. If that works, we'll have to go back to the main browser and then clear the cache and cookies to get rid of the accumulated junk files. Switching to other supported web browsers can be a good alternative, too.

Please take note that some accounts require extra steps before you can make them inactive:

If this a duplicate account, you also have the option to merge your accounts to create a single representation in the Chart of Accounts.

Additionally, I'm sharing this article that can help you get rid of inactive accounts while running your reports: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online.
