Hello, saritcohen1. QuickBooks Online is primarily designed for business use, but it can be adapted for personal finance with some adjustments. I can share some basics when managing your home income and expenses.

If you have no employees, meaning you do not pay anyone a salary or need to file tax forms for them. If employed, you could create a customer profile for your employer in your accounting software and record your salary as a deposit from that company. However, accounting for taxes taken out of your paycheck can be complex and may require the assistance of a tax accountant to set up the necessary accounts and make monthly entries. A simpler approach would be to record a straightforward deposit and provide your year-end tax forms to your accountant.

Vendors include everyone you purchase items from, such as Home Depot, local stores, and utilities like water, electricity, and gas. You'll need to create a checking account and likely a credit card account in QBO. When making an entry for a purchase, you must associate it with the correct expense account. QuickBooks does not include categories like groceries or household items by default, so you may need to create these in the Chart of Accounts or choose existing accounts and consistently use them for specific purchases.

While it is possible to adapt QuickBooks, a business software, for personal finance, it will require some adjustments. Additionally, QuickBooks isn't designed to track investment accounts. Although you can record the quantity and original purchase price of individual stocks or the month-end cash balance in investment accounts, there is no functionality to download and track investment accounts comprehensively.
