Sort transactions by category / account

Hi

I'm trying to sort my transactions by category.  In the chart of accounts history, all of the columns allow this, but "account" does not.

How do I find all the transactions assigned to a category so that I can assign them to a different one?  I can't even search for them.😩

The same applies if I try to do this in the transaction screen - only some of the columns can be sorted (in this case it's called "category" not "account" which I find confusing).

Thanks for any clarification!

The Payee, Category, and Rule columns don't have a sort icon after the transactions have been categorised, Toni. I know how important these icons are to sort out all the details on your bank transaction page. Let me help you send a feedback request to our development team.

Hello, Toni.

We can go directly to your bank account, and from the Categorised tab, you can view the transactions assigned to the correct category. However, you can Undo the transactions if needed to modify them. Then, go to the For Review tab to categorize the transactions correctly.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Transactions and select the bank account.
  2. From the Categorised tab, you can view the category assigned to the specific transactions.
  3. If needed changes, click the Undo, and go to the For review to categorise it correctly.
  4. Click the transactions and hit Add to categorise.

Additionally, learn from this article how to categorise your bank transactions after you manually update your accounts: Categorise And Match Online Bank Transactions In QuickBooks Online.

If a transaction is missing, you can manually add it. For more information, you can refer to this article that will show you more information and detailed steps when uploading transactions: Manually Upload Transactions Into QuickBooks Online.

Hi @AileneA

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I'm afraid you have misunderstood my question completely. Perhaps I was unclear.

I want to SORT the transactions by category, as I would sort by date etc.  This does not seem to be possible - there is no little triangle indicating that option.

Hello there, Toni.

Let me join the thread and answer your question.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), you can pull up the Transaction Detail by Account report to display the transactions and totals for each account in your chart of accounts. This makes it convenient for you to identify the category for each transaction.

To run the report, here's how:

  1. Go to the left menu and select Reports.
  2. Enter Transaction Detail by Account in the search box and open the report.
  3. Set the Report period and Accounting method.

If you wish to personalise the report to display the specific information you need, such as adding new columns and rows in QuickBooks, you can refer to this article for more details: Customise reports in QuickBooks Online.

Feel free to use the Reply button below if you have further questions, Toni. We're here to help.

Thanks so much for your input @JoesemM  - you have cleared it up for me.  I thought it might be my issue.

It would help me tremendously to sort transactions like this, so I will send feedback.

Please fix this. Once they are categorized you have to view them in that tab and there are no sort arrows.  Just add the sorting arrows to the Category tab in the header bar.  This is super basic and its probably a result of poor test scripts.

I get what you're saying and I'm guessing you're trying to do exactly what I'm trying to do. While the issue with sorting still remains, the best alternative I've found is to use the "Reclassify Transaction" tool. If you type "reclassify" into the search bar at the top of QB then it should pop up... Hope that helps?
