Let’s disconnect and reconnect your account to get you back on track. Before we proceed, let me share some of the potential causes of the Error message: client_or_agent_not_authorised:

  • Every 18 months you are required by HMRC to re-establish your connection with them in QuickBooks. Try disconnecting and reconnecting your account to fix this.
  • Use the correct Gateway Gateway user ID and password specifically for MTD provided to your by HMRC–this should be sent to you via email.
  • Make sure you turn on MTD for VAT in QuickBooks and connect to HMRC.
  • Utilize the correct VAT registration number (VRN) in QuickBooks. If you've been issued a new VRN, you'll need to update this in QuickBooks, here's how to edit VAT settings.

When you’re ready, follow these steps to unlink the MTD. It only takes a few clicks to accomplish them.

  1. Open your QuickBooks and head to the Gear icon to select Account and settings.
  2. Go to the Advanced menu and choose Making Tax Digital.
  3. Click the Learn how to disconnect button and then follow the steps to complete the process.

Once done, link QBO and MTD again using the correct login credentials.

After running the troubleshooting steps, you should be able to submit an MTD for VAT return to HMRC in QuickBooks Online. You can go over these articles to learn more about how to handle MTD errors and other issues (unable to submit a VAT return).

Reach out to me again if you have other QuickBooks-related concerns or additional questions about submitting your VAT. I’ll be glad to get this taken care of for you. Have a good one, @SRC1

Hi eddytea,

Thanks for joining us here on the Community!

There are a few things to check when we come across this message, please first see that the VAT registration number is entered correctly within the settings (Taxes > Edit VAT > Edit settings), and that this is formatted in numbers only without spaces or letters.

If this is correct, please get back to us below and advise if this the first time you'll be submitting VAT via MTD in QuickBooks, and whether you're submitting for your own company or as an agent on behalf of a client.

Thanks 🙂

Hi I have  ‘CLIENT_OR_AGENT_NOT_AUTHORISED’

I logged into the gateway to reauthorise with an incorrect code. I have the correct code now but Quickbooks won't let me reconnect. How do I reset so I can log in as normal to reauthorise?

Hello there, @MatthewCullen. Let me share further insights about the error when submitting VAT in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

The error message you're receiving is a common issue when using MTD services in QBO. This message may appear if:

  • Reauthorizing the connection between QuickBooks Online and HMRC is needed.
  • Entered incorrect credentials for MTD provided by HMRC when setting up MTD in QuickBooks.
  • The VAT registration number in QuickBooks does not match the records in HMRC. If you have received a new VAT registration number, you will need to update it in your VAT settings.

These are the reasons if you're an accountant/bookkeeper:
