How to upgrade Company File from Older Version?

I've been using Quickbooks Pro 6 for about 20 years, and have recently installed it under Windows 10.

Although everything functions ok, the software keeps asking me to register the product. Each time It accepts the registration details as correct, but then asks for it again a couple of days later!

I decided to take a look at the latest desktop version, but have only been able to find a trial download of Quickbooks UK 2015.

Having installed the trial version I've not been able to open my existing company file and get the following message - "This company file is too old for Quickbooks to upgrade directly"

I'm not sure how to proceed at this stage. If I can't fix my existing software issue of repeated registration requests, or trial or use my existing data in latest software, then I'll have to start from scratch.

Hope someone can advise. :)

Hi Magicalwonders,

You may need to use the converter kit.

Download and install the upgrader's kit (QuickBooks 2006)

Click here to download our upgrader's kit and save the .exe file in a temporary location on your computer.
This upgrader's kit is a special trial version of QuickBooks 2006. It'll ask you to install SimpleStart, Regular, Pro, or Premier Accountant edition. Install the same edition you are currently using. After installing, you'll have two months and six uses before the software acts you to activate. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the file and double-click the .exe file that you just downloaded. Follow the on-screen instructions.

When asked for an installation code, use the following: 26512-85587-55550-710133

This code will allow you to use the trial version of QuickBooks for 60 days, but you will not be able to activate it.

When asked where you want to install QuickBooks, choose a different location than your current version of QuickBooks. Do not install on top of your old version!

Convert your company file to QuickBooks 2006

Now, you have to open QuickBooks 2006 and then open your old company file to convert it to the 2006 format.

1.      Open QuickBooks 2006.

2.      Open your old company file. Go to File, and select Open Company. In the Open company window, navigate to and select your old company file and click Open.

3.      In the Update Company File to New Version window, select Start Update.

4.      Follow the on-screen instructions. When asked for a name and location of the new company file, append “2006” to the company file name. DO NOT OVERWRITE YOUR EXISTING COMPANY FILE! You will need it to view VAT reports from previous periods.

5.      After the conversion finishes, close QuickBooks 2006.

Create a backup copy from the QuickBooks 2006 and restore it on the QuickBooks 2015 Trial version you recently install.

To open the backup copy on the QuickBooks 2015 Trial, you may need to open the Sample first to have the option of “Open or Restore Company” under File Menu.

Many thanks for the detailed instructions. I assume this will work for updating company file to use in Quickbooks 2016 as well?

Dear IntuitErickFloyd,

Thank you very much for this answer. I have tried following your instructions here, but there is a problem. I have successfully installed QuickBooks 2006 and clicked on the restore company backup, it then asks to upgrade the company file to new version. I click upgrade then it asks for the QuickBooks 2006 CD to be inserted, which I don't have, since I am using the version you linked to in your post. Is there a way past this prompt because the only options are retry and cancel, in other words it won't continue without the CD, which I obviously don't have.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Thank you for your help.

Mark Pawson.

Hello magicalwonders,

The process you mentioned above should work, but since your QuickBooks version is very old, you might get problems when updating your company file. Installing a newer QuickBooks Desktop version on your computer and updating your company file to that version should help.

Here’s an article that will guide you through the process:

Please remove this content as it may confuse the customer, they're using QB UK version, thanks.

Yes the real answer is the poster need QB 2006 UK version first then upgrade existing version to QB 2006.From there its better to upgrade to QB 2012 first thew to latest version.

However if you are registered for vat then I would seriously recommend not doing this.

It would be quicker and easier to install latest version Qb 2016 and then take the TB from old version and import by manual journal entry all the opening balances.

QB old versions can be upgraded to new versions and should be but vat legislation has changed considerably since the version quoted by the poster, it is now much easier to start a new version.
