Unmerging Customers

My predecessor somehow got two customers with similar names confused and ended up merging them into two accounts.  They each have several different transactions that are now showing up as belonging to one customer.  Is there a safe way to 'unmerge' these customers in QB Desktop, assigning their transactions to the correct customer?  Some of these transactions go back to 2011...

Hello, Cryolab.

I can share some information about merging customers in QuickBooks Desktop.

When you merge two customers, unmerging them is unavailable since the process is irreversible and permanent. However, you'll have the option to create a new customer and edit each transaction for that specific customer.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Customers menu.
  2. Select Customer Center.
  3. You can either choose Customer & Jobs or Transactions tab.
  4. Locate and double-click the transaction to open.
  5. Change the name of the customer, then hit Save & Close.

Feel free to review this guide, this contains detailed steps in case you need to run sales or customer-related reports: Customise customer, job, and sales reports.

Leave a comment if you have further questions managing your transactions. I'll be here to help you. Take care!
