Question

What actually happens after 31st January 2023 to my QuickBooks Desktop product?

Once we get to 1st February 2023 will we still be able to do the following:

a - open the company file and run various reports and export data?

b - enter transactions?

c - Submit MTD VAT returns?

Can you please advise what the situation will be be both a pro-advisor licence and for our clients normal licences?

Will it be just the support that ends at that point (i.e. no telephone support and no software updates/patches) or will any of the above list also no longer work?

The short 15 month notice is not enough to migrate clients to another product, especially with QBO still falling way short of what QuickBooks desktop can do even for basic clients.

Which QB Desktop year version do you have? What will happen on January 31, 2023? Did we miss any announcements recently for the QB Desktop UK version?

We had an email this morning stating this from Intuit:

Thanks for being a QuickBooks Desktop user. We are writing to let you know that sadly - we have taken the decision to discontinue QuickBooks Desktop and Desktop Support for our UK customers.

We won’t be launching a 2022 edition of QuickBooks Desktop in the UK, but you will continue to receive full support until 31 January 2023.

Really disappointed in how they have dealt with this!

Wow! We just noticed this update.

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/uk/desktop/

You may have 2 options:
1. To comply with MTD requirements, migrate to QB Online UK version or another accounting app.

https://quickbooks.grsm.io/UK

2. Migrate to QB Desktop US version. You can still purchase a one time license of QB Desktop 2021 and a 3rd party conversion service to bring your data if required.

If you are using QB Desktop 2019 UK or older versions and doesn't need to comply with MTD requirements, you can purchase a one time license of QB Desktop 2019 UK version.

Hello Jason, As mentioned as of 1st Feb 2023 the desktop product will cease to work. 2021 was a monthly subscription-based product in the UK. You will not be able to use it. We apologise for the lack of clarity on this and have feedback to our senior team both your and John's comments.

Hi Emma, so the 2 initial Intuit posts above are incorrect then. This is a much worse scenario then. As I said earlier to outright prevent access from 1st Feb 2023 is totally unacceptable and a total disregard to customers who have loyally been paying Intuit for this product. At the very least you need to let us access the product and run reports. Surely making the product read only is not beyond your IT guys?!

Just joining this thread now having finally called Intuit to try and understand whether QB Desktop would continue to work at all post 31 Jan 2023. It appears not. Time to panic.

Has anyone got any suggestions at all as to an alternative product? I note one poster mentions Sage comes in at £20k minimum and that Xero were completely not responsive. Is there anything out there that can roughly match QBD's functionality? Like many other posters here, I looked at QB Online when it first came out and trialled it, complete rubbish. I am now wondering what the hell I'm going to do...

Appreciate Intuit you might not like us discussing competitor products but you have left us with no choice given your withdrawal of what was an excellent product. I also echo other comments here that we'd have been willing to pay more each month to keep the product going. So short-sighted as QBO will never suit many of us.

Hi,

We went with Sage 50cloud Accounting Professional in the end. (Despite the name it is not cloud based, our company files are kept locally.) Xerox and other versions just didn't have the functions we needed.

QB Desktop Premier Pro was costing us £55 + VAT per user. (We had 2 users)

Sage costs us £160 inc. VAT per month for FIVE users.

It does everything QB Premier Pro does and more, it's not quite so easy to use but is much more flexible. Plenty UK help files available. Addons are available to integrate with our website to download invoices and customers etc.

With Intuits appalling (and probably illegal) decision not to give us access to our old data after January, we have no option but to also pay for its cloud version for three years, just to have access to old QB data in case HMRC decide to audit or we need to look up old sales for warranty issues etc.

Intuits attitude to this issue issue is terrible, read only access would be simple to implement if they wanted to. QB Online is terrible and is no way suitable for us to use, its for small one man businesses really, no flexibility or functions compared to the Desktop version.

Appreciate the information Yahal, thanks.

My company is not VAT registered and we use Quickbooks as a simple bookkeeping program (I know, using a hammer to crack an egg).

The version we have is Premier 2018. We do not use the program for payroll, VAT or any other interactive role.

Can we still continue to use the program simply for bookkeeping or will it cease to work at all?

They said the program won't work after June but I don't believe it. I would recommend converting your data to QBO in early June and contacting Intuit to get the activation code for your QB Desktop license now for your insurance.

If you have the old version that is a buy and pay once only and not a monthly subscription you will be fine to continue. If you have been paying a monthly subscription you will not be able to access it after 30.06.31. All you can have after 30.06.23 is to you the access tool that uploads your data file and downloads it back with a limited period of ability to extract reports. Not the reports you want but the reports that Intuit thinks you can have.

Cessation means Cessation, end not longer there.

So an update to share re the solution I am putting in place for a client who needs decent stock control... We are using QBO integrated with SOS Inventory. Its a US company and designed for QBO. Good stock control options and you can customise your sales invoices to show pretty much anything you want. It also offers price levels (which was in QBD but surprise surprise not in QBO). You can get pretty responsive email support and also telephone support are helpful (although they're 6hrs behind) so I'm working evenings just now.

This is all unfortunately a far weaker system than having it all in QBD. My client is having to learn 2 new products and will have manage them going forward. The integration is pretty good so far but having things in 2 places is never going to be as good as in one. So far it has taken days of software trials so my client is very thanksful to Intuit for costing them thousands of pounds and for the worry and uncertainty! We've ended up with QBO as there are some similarities to QBD and my client needed that to try to deal with the issue.
