Question

When calculating mileage allowances, should this be return milage or 1 way only? Eg, as an electrician, travel from home to my customers address where I complete the work. Do I record 15 miles, 1 way journey, or 30 miles return. Quickbooks records 1

I'm happy to see you here in the Community, @john168.

I'd like to share some insights on how mileage tracking works in QuickBooks Self-employed so you can record your trips correctly.

Yes, you are right. The system only tracks one way of your trip. That being said, you'll need to enter the total miles of the trip (back and forth).

To do that:

  1. Go to the Miles menu at the left.
  2. Select on Add trip.
  3. Enter the distance in the Add miles field.
  4. Edit the Date.
  5. Select the ✏️pencil icon to edit the start and end addresses.
  6. Add a Trip purpose note.
  7. When you're done, press on Save.

Here's a link that you can check out on how to add trips depending on the device that you're using: Manually add trips to track mileage in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

You also have the option to track miles automatically. All you have to do is turn on the app and let QuickBooks will take care of the rest. To learn more about this process, please see this article: Automatically track mileage in QuickBooks Self-Employed.
