I'm about to enable account numbers in the Chart of accounts. I've read the how-to information. My question is, does it make any difference WHEN I enable this feature? Is it ok to turn this feature on in the middle of a fiscal year

Hi gharrison1104,

It's nice to see you in Community!  QuickBooks Online provides many valuable features to suite your business needs.  Although account numbers aren't set by default, you can manually add them without concerns in other areas of your books.  This is a dynamic way to keep your chart of accounts organized!  Please note that when the account number is changed in QuickBooks, all the previous transactions will be linked to the new number.

Here's how  to turn on account numbers;

1. Open your Settings ⚙ and select Account and settings

2. Select the Advanced tab from the left menu

3. Click on the Edit ✎ in the Chart of accounts section

4. Turn on Enable account numbers

Note; If you want account numbers to show on reports and transactions, select Show account numbers.

5. Hit Save, then Done.

Follow these steps to assign account numbers;

1. Open your Settings ⚙ and select Chart of accounts

2. Click on the ▼ dropdown menu in the Action column and select Edit for the account you'd like to enter a number for

3. Enter the Number and hit Save and close.
