I need to reclassify the sales tax code for existing transactions. How can I reclassify the sales tax code on my transactions in bulk?

Hi info-lakeshoreac,

Thanks for reaching out here.  It's essential that your sales tax is recorded accurately in QuickBooks, and I can see how reclassifying them in one batch would be a great time saver. I'd be glad to provide some insight here!

The Reclassify Transactions tool is available in QuickBooks Desktop Accountant, Enterprise, or Accountant Enterprise.  It can be used to reclassify sales tax by changing the tax codes for specific items, but the total amount/gross amount won't change at the transaction level.  In addition, invoices that are set as 'out of scope', cannot be reclassified.  I recommend reaching out to an accounting professional, if you aren't currently subscribed to one of the products listed above.  If you don't have an accountant, we can help you locate a ProAdvisor in your local area.

If you have any other questions, feel free to reach back out.  We're here for you!

Hi,

The Reclassify Transactions tool only gives me the option to reclassify the account, not the tax code. I need to change the Tax code of all transactions under Meals and Entertainment from H (13%) to ME (6.5%).

Hi there. It's important to note that you can't reclassify sales tax codes in the following cases:

  • Transactions marked as Out of scope at the transaction level. For example, invoices that are set as out of scope at an invoice level can't be reclassified.
  • Transactions with discounts.

However, you can reclassify sales tax by changing the Tax codes for specific items. You'll also notice that the total amount (Gross amount) won't change at the transaction level. Let me know if you have other questions, I'll be on standby.
