Question

Can I assign a class to a vendor instead of a transaction?

Our vendors are classified into parts, sub, labour, etc. However, class is not a field for vendor inputs. I found out that one can only assign a class to either an entire transaction or one line of a transaction. We would like to assign the classes of parts, sub, labour to a vendor instead of a transaction.

Hi carol-li-brainsi,

I can see the benefit of having your vendor's added to a specific class for tracking purposes while keeping your books aligned.  In QuickBooks Online, you can use categories to group products and services and create sub-categories to be more specific.  I'll go over how to create category's and how to add them to existing products and services.

Here's how to create a category:

1. From the left menu, select Sales and then Products and Services

2. Click on the drop down arrow beside More, choose Manage categories

3. Select New category and enter the name

Note:  If you need to create a sub-category, checkbox Is a sub-category and the main category

4. When finished, hit Save

To add categories to existing products or services, follow these steps:

1. Go to the Sales from the left menu, then Products and Services.

2. Search for the product or service you want to categorize.

3. Select Edit from the Action column.

4. From the Category ▼ dropdown, select the best fit, or select + Add new to create a new one.

5. Select Save and close when finished
